1. Myth: I don’t need a business plan–it’s just me!
Starting a business without a plan is like taking a trip in a foreign country without a map. You might have a lot of fun along the way, and meet a lot of friends, but you are likely to end up at a very different place than you originally set out forand you might have to phone home for funds for your return ticket.

2. Myth: I have to buy business plan software before I can start.
Business plan software comes in many shapes and sizes, and prices. Many are more geared at small and growing businesses with employees.

The only time you need to follow a specific outline is if you are looking for funding.

5. Myth: My business plan needs to be perfect before I can start my business.
If you wait for everything to be perfectly detailed, you may never start.
Solo Entrepreneur Reality: If you have at least a first draft that answers those ten basic questions, you are ready to launch your business! Make your business plan a living, evolving document. In the startup stages, review and update your plan every 2-3 months. As you grow and stabilize, you can slow down the review cycle to every 6-12 months. All business plans should be reviewed and updated at least once a year.
6. Myth: I have to do everything I say I’m going to do in my business plan, or I’m a failure.
Many Solo Entrepreneurs never start because of this mythwhich leaves them feeling that the success of their future business suddenly rides on each stroke of the pen or click of the keyboard!
Solo Entrepreneur Reality: Think of your business plan as a roadmap for a trip. Expect to take some detours for road construction. Be flexible enough to take some exciting, unplanned side trips. 7. Myth: A good business plan has a nice cover, is at least 40 pages long, must be typed and double-spaced…
Business plans intended for investors, such as a bank or venture capitalist, must meet certain requirements that such investors expect.
Solo Entrepreneur Reality: As a Solo Entrepreneur, your business plan need only satisfy YOU. It might be scribbled on a napkin, on stickie notes on your wall, or consist of a collage of pictures and captions. It might be all in one document or scattered among several mediums. As long as you know it in your head and heart without having to look at it, and and it is easily accessible to you when you have doubts, that’s all that is necessary.
8. Myth: I don’t need a loanso I don’t need a business plan.
YOU are the investor in your businessand would you invest in the stock of some company without seeing a prospectus?
Solo Entrepreneur Reality: Seeing your plan in black and white (or color, if you prefer!), can give a whole new view on the financial viability of your business. If “doing the numbers” seems overwhelming, remember you don’t need fancy spreadsheets. Just lay out a budget that shows where all the money is coming from (and going), and have an accountant review it for additional perspective.
9. Myth: My business plan is in my headthat’s good enough.
I don’t know about you, but I sometimes can’t remember what I planned yesterday to do tomorrow, if I don’t write it down!

Some schools of thought advocate that the act of writing a plan down triggers our subconscious to start working on how to manifest that plan. And, of course, it’s a lot easier to remember when you have it in front of you. And a lot easier to share and get feedback from your non-mind reading supporters.
10. Myth: Friends and family are the best sources of feedback and advice on my business plan.
If your brother is an accountant and your best friend is a market research expert, then this might be true.
Solo Entrepreneur Reality: As well meaning as our friends and family can often be, they just aren’t the best way to get honest, objective guidance. Instead, seek out folks that have specific knowledge that will help you, are willing to be candid with you, and that have a genuine interest in helping you succeed. As no doubt you have noticed online shopping is becoming more and more popular. In this article I write about this new revolution and discuss whether in my opinion this popularity is likely to continue or even increase, or if it is just some sort of short term fashion trend.
I was introduced to online shopping a few years ago when a friend of mine advised me that a certain electrical type company was offering their products with a discount of ten percent, when they were purchased online. This fascinated me and I then started to investigate if this was a trend which other retail outlets were offering. I found that quite a few others had similar online discounts and I soon started to catch the online shopping bug.
As a man I am not really one for shopping. I am not trying to suggest that all men hate shopping but I certainly do. When my wife wants to go on one of her trips to all of the local clothes and other shops, I do go with her and attempt to show an interest but in truth can not wait to get home. When buying items such as clothes for myself, I of course prefer to buy online. This is where online shopping become a dream for me.
A couple of years ago at Christmas time, I must admit that I purchased around eighty percent of my presents online. This saved me having to go to the shops in the first place, fighting through the Christmas shopping crowds and trying to find a car park space.
My family even now buy our weekly food shopping online. My wife prefers doing the food shopping in this way as she does not have to wait to have her items scanned and does not have to put up with the children asking if they can have this or that.
I believe that this online shopping revolution has only just started. I think that more and more companies are going to offer this service and that their websites will become even more impressive and easy to use for the consumer. People especially women will always love to go shopping but I think for certain goods, for example larger and more expensive items, that they will be mainly bought online.
In around five years time most households in the UK will have access to the internet therefore introducing even more potential customers to the option of online shopping.
My life has certainly been made a lot easier and less stressful through online shopping and I would advise other people to give it a go.

Are my neighbors listening to my phone sex calls? I don’t suppose I will ever know the truth.
I know they could be. Living in a fairly new suburb of a fast growing city has created a perfect eavesdropping situation. The houses are only about 8 feet apart, the trees are still tiny, and the summers are hot. My windows are wide open at night, as I am sure everyone else’s are in this city. It would be reassuring if there were lots of street noises at night to drown out the moans, sighs and demands (I am Mistress Cassie, afterall), however after 10 pm it is dead silent in this neighborhood. Am I the only night owl here? I doubt it.
So, lets just say my lucky neighbors have plenty of opportunity to listen to some very naughty conversations.
“Martha, you’ll never guess what I heard last night!”
“Oh yeah, I hear it sometimes too… I think its someone’s cat”
“No Martha, its a woman. A woman aahh, she’s ahhh, well, it sounds like she is moaning!”
“Really? I am going to listen again tonight”
Maybe its not like that at all. Maybe its George out by the back fence, just listening and enjoying, not daring to move, afraid I’ll catch him, or worse, his wife Martha will catch him!
Well, we can’t have this kind of situation. I refuse to close the windows and melt away my summer nights. I really don’t intend to patrol the fence between the backyards. I am definitely not going to ask George if he is listening to my phone sex calls. Its my business, literally, and if its of any interest to anyone else, they should be paying $2.99 per minute like the rest of you.
