The Selous Game reserve is internationally recognized as one of best managed areas in Africa. Poaching in this reserve is minimal and animal populations including Elephants are thriving. What is the storey behind this success? This was not always the storey for this area – once the Selous Game Reserve was under threat from the blight of the poachers.

The Selous Game Reserve is huge with only a small section of the park used for photography safaris and another section used for hunting safaris. Many people, including myself, have a hard time understanding that the hunting safari is a good thing for conservation. However, if it were not for the hunting safari the Selous would be a waste land devoid of animals.

Hunting is the success storey behind the Selous which is fast becoming an area that is the place to see game whilst on safari in Africa. The reserve suffered greatly from poaching in the late 1970’s and most of the 1980’s.

Disaster struck in 1973 when the Tanzania Government gave way – under considerable international pressure – to ban hunting from the Selous. Once this ban took hold the rot set in, the decline of this park was as rapid as it was dramatic. Poaching gangs of up to sixty people descended into the reserve. The many rhino’s in Stiegler’s Gorge were poached out and elephants slaughtered in colossal numbers.

Despite the reserve being declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, the massive slaughter of elephants had begun. Numbers of 100,000 elephants were reduced to less than 30,000 by 1991. It was reported that every day twenty elephants died at the hands of these poaching gangs.

With the help several conservation organizations from outside and within Africa and the determination of the Tanzanian Government this downward spiral was halted. Determined and brave young wardens were put into the parks and the fight against illegal poaching began, at last, to be won. Hunting was reintroduced into the reserve; with the hunters kept well away from the photographic tourists. The revenue generated from the hunting helps greatly to fund the effective management of the Selous.

Animals are carefully monitored and this enables quotes of specific animals to be allocated to the short hunting season. Hunting is therefore returning the Selous Game Reserve to its former glory. As mentioned at the beginning of this article this area of Tanzania is now thriving thanks to a careful managed policies including hunting; which is used as a means of conservation.

Turkey hunting is challenging, exciting and in some cases becomes addictive. Turkey’s senses are extremely keen - even your heart pounding can make the turkey vanish like a puff of smoke.

Basic help in turkey hunting

Before you can hunt a wild turkey, you have got to find them. The easiest way to do this is by locating the general areas of the turkey’s habitat.

• Get a good map of the area you plan to hunt.

• Wave or use a locator call like an owl hooter or crow call or even a turkey call to try to get a response. When you hear a gobbler, mark the locator map.

• Scout for the best location on foot. Check for signs of the bird’s scratches, droppings of feathers. This information can help you locate some areas. Check along mud holes, creek banks, pastures, log roads, fencerows etc. as many trips as possible.

• Never try to get too close to the turkey. A turkey’s eyes, ears and awareness are many times better than yours.

• Choose a tree that is wider than your shoulders. This will protect you from other hunters that might come behind you and mistakenly assume that you are a real turkey.

• Camouflage is almost a must to avoid being seen. Wild turkeys have such keen vision. Many turkey hunters usually wear camo suit, cap, facemask, gloves, vest with many pockets to carry calls and maybe a snack. Also do not forget to wear dark colored socks so that when you sit down, they would not show you. But the main thing to remember: your movement is more important; regardless of how well you are camouflage. It doesn’t make you completely visible. Even though you are camouflage, you are still an unnatural form in the woods. Movement is the greatest enemy of the turkey hunter. A turkey can detect you 10 times faster than you sense the turkey.

• The best shotgun and ammunition for turkey hunting is the combination that delivers a dense, hard-hitting pattern at 40-45 yards. Practice with a target that portrays a turkey’s vital head and neck area. These parts are the ones that you should be shooting. You should have at least 8-10 pellets in the vital area at 40 yards.

• Do not hide so well that you cannot see what is happening. Blinds are useful for the turkey hunter, but when constructed so well that vision is obstructed, it is no longer a blind, and it is a hiding place, as beneficial to the turkey as it is to you.

• Cease from using gobbler calls. Although this call can sometimes be productive, it is also very dangerous. In areas where many hunters are located, you can attract hunters to you rather than turkeys.

• Never wear any red, white or blue clothes. These are the colors of the gobbler’s head - the main target of a turkey hunter.

• If another hunter is working a bird, do not mess everything up by trying to call the bird to you or spooking the bird. This is very unsportsmanlike. The true and experienced hunters do not do that kind of thing.

The geographical layout and location of the Florida Keys provide anglers with many fishing opportunities. With the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Bay on the North side and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, it’s no wonder so many fishing enthusiasts flock to the Keys each year to pursue a dream of a permit on fly or to catch some fresh fish for dinner.

The Florida Keys chain of islands flow south and west from the Miami area of Florida. The waters surrounding the islands provide many types of habitat for fish. Flats, or shallow water areas, surround many of the islands and extend into Florida Bay and the Everglades. To the west of Key West also lies one of the only atolls in North America, the Marquesas. This area of flats surrounding the Marquesas is 3 miles wide and has been referred to as “the golden donut” by famous author, Jeffrey Cardenas. The Marquesas is a magical place where tarpon, bonefish and permit feed daily on the flats. There is more life here at this atoll, just 22 miles from Key West Harbor, than in many of the other areas of the backcountry of the Lower Keys. Because it is separated from other points of land by 8 miles of brutally rough water, the Boca Grande Channel. This shallow but wide channel feeds water from the Atlantic to the Gulf and on any given day can be brutal to cross in a small boat. Anglers find this place to be most promising on days during the annual tarpon migration while slow summer days you may have the whole atoll to yourself.

The Keys not only attract saltwater fly fishing enthusiasts in search of their first permit on a flyrod but light tackle anglers in search of some arm burning fish to give them a run for their money. Many species call the shallow patch reefs and wrecks home in the Lower Keys. Grouper, mutton snapper, yellowtail snapper, porgy, cobia, grunts, and triggerfish should fill your vocabulary when talking about reef dwelling fish. Many of these species will eat a variety of bait including bucktail jigs, rubber DOA shrimp, live pilchards, squid or chunks of ballyhoo. Bottom fishing is always better during the cooler months here in the Keys. Fall is when many of the larger grouper will move from deeper water where they spent the summer back up onto the reef areas.

For the offshore enthusiast there are so many species to fish for. Challenge your angling ability with light tackle sport fishing for wahoo, sailfish, mahi mahi or tuna, or jump on board a sport fishing vessel and head further offshore for marlin, sharks, swordfish and deep drop for snowy grouper. Many of the species mentioned for light tackle and reef fishing may also be caught off an offshore trolling vessel. It highly depends on the conditions and the captain’s abilities.

If you have heard someone talk about fishing the Dry Tortugas they probably had some big fish stories to tell about this fishing playground some 70 miles from Key West. Fort Jefferson is located in the Dry Tortugas National Park and is a tourist attraction not to be missed. This beautiful outpost was never actually used as a fort but served as a safe harbor for shrimp and fishing boats traveling to the mainland Florida, New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Today it still serves as a safe haven from the weather but there are many visitors by seaplane and boats from Key West daily. There are few fishing charters with the licensing to fish the grounds around the Dry Tortugas but if you get to go it will certainly be a big fish event.

Loren Rea lives and works in the Lower Keys and has been a part of the fishing community for nearly a decade there.

Rafting through the Grand Canyon is the experience of a lifetime. Viewing the canyon from along the rim is a stunning experience on its own, but it pales in comparison to the adventure of riding the river through it. Several river recreation outfitters offer guided rafting tours through the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon was formed over several million years. An ancestral version of what is now the Colorado River slowly eroded the earth, creating this breathtaking formation. The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The canyon is over 250 miles long and is over a mile deep in some parts.

Grand Canyon river rafting is one of the most fascinating experiences available. Grand Canyon river rafting tours usually run several days and many last more than a week. These tours often include side trips to areas at the bottom of the canyon where travelers near the river. Visitors often stop and examine Native American ruins and fascinating geological formations.

At one time, people who navigated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon did so at serious risk to their lives. Now that technology and expertise have evolved, it is a safe expedition undertaken by relative novices. There are a variety of options for travelers who want to navigate the Colorado River through the canyon. Some outfitters offer motorized rafts for people who want to see the canyon but who may not be willing or able to paddle a boat through the rapids. Some tours offer Dory tours. Dories are boats similar to those that early Grand Canyon explorers used. These trips take much longer than the motorized raft tours because it takes longer to travel and because they are often more in depth. Truly adventurous souls can experience Grand Canyon
river rafting the old fashioned way and go on guided paddle raft tours.

Grand Canyon river rafting is a one of a kind experience. Rafters can examine some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world while navigating one of the continent’s greatest rivers.

River Rafting Info provides detailed information on river rafting trips in Washington, Colorado, California and the Grand Canyon, as well as Salmon River in Idaho and Rogue River in Oregon. River Rafting Info is the sister site of Inflatable Boats Web.

Summary:

A new PDF converter has just been released by Nooran Corp. of
Canada, named after their site PDF-File.com. This PDF converter
is the second offering from this Canadian software firm.

Ontario, Canada. - Nov. 2005

The latest PDF converter has just hit the PDF space in the form
of PDF-File PDF Converter. This is another quality offering by
Nooran Corp., a software firm based in Canada. The firm has
named this PDF conversion tool after the website PDF-File.com,
from which the software is being sold. Nooran Corp. had also
launched a software utility recently by the name of
123FileConvert.

The PDF-File PDF Converter has multi-function capability: it can
convert a PDF file to a Word document, and a .doc or
.rtf document can be converted into a PDF file. So you can make your PDF files editable by changing them into
one of the popular text formats, and also create or write a PDF file from these text formats.
You don’t have to worry about losing the formatting of the
source document as the software handles this very well.

This PDF converter is an easy-to-use tool, which does not need
any special technical skills to operate. It has a “wizard” style
interface, which guides you step-by-step through the PDF
conversion process. This PDF tool is therefore, one of the
easiest in its segment to use.

In addition to being easy to use, the PDF-File Converter comes
with a lot of features, which are surprisingly being offered at
a very low price of $19.95.

The PDF-File converter, apart from the basic function of
converting to a PDF and from a PDF, can also extract images from
PDFs, and further, convert these images to popular graphic
formats; this feature is particularly useful as you can extract
graphic files from any PDF file to a specific folder in the
format that you want.

The PDF-File Converter has multi-lingual PDF conversion
capability and it can convert PDF files in nine
languages–English, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, French, Russian,
Norwegian, Portuguese and German.

Multiple text files can also be combined to create a
consolidated PDF file. A PDF can also be partially converted by
specifying a page range for conversion.

This is one PDF converter, which has collected a lot of
favorable reviews and awards from software and shareware sites
very fast. If you wish to try it out, the PDF-File PDF Converter
can be downloaded free for an evaluation from
http://www.pdf-file.com.
