Living With SEO

I have had a career in the traditional Western medical field as a Registered Nurse for 35 years. I spent 13 of them in the Rehabilitation field and saw many different and difficult cases. One of the units I worked on saw back pain patients who had been unable to work for a long time and were not getting better. Many of them had mid back pain and had pain with any kind of movement. The unit explored many different modalities from inner core muscle strength training, transcutaneous stimulation, and relaxation therapy. In later years, I discovered Pilates and Qi QWong.

After having a history of back problems, with intermittent bouts of pain, muscle spasms and sometimes disc inflammation, I felt I was experienced in dealing with back pain. I had worked on a unit for patients with chronic back pain when I was young which only resulted in my being able to instruct others in managing their pain, but not in incorporating it into my own life. It took an auto accident many years later to bring me to that point. I was fortunate to be sent to a physical therapist that taught me back pain exercises to strengthen my core muscles.

Reciprocal links are an important step in your overall plan to get site visitors.

What are they? Reciprocal links are mutual links you and some other web site owner agree to post on your respective sites.

Why are they so important? It goes back to the basic nature of the Internet. The Internet exists as an information medium. When you go to a search engine, you are looking for links to the information you need. The better information sources have already been found by others, many of whom thought so much of those sources that they placed links to them on their web site. So the number of other web sites linking to a particular source of information, the better the chance it is a good source of information. All the major search engines take link popularity into account when they determine how to rank the results of any search. The end result is that to get a good ranking in the major search engines, an important step is to make sure there are lots of other sites that link back to yours. And, since the links are reciprocal, you will need to put a link to each site that links to you. You can’t expect someone to link to you unless you link to them.

All right, you say, I will get all my friends to put links to my site on their sites. Not so fast! The number of links isn’t all that matters! In addition to looking at the number of links that point to your site, the search engines also examine the quality of those links. Links from sites that are relevant to yours rank highest. If you sell dog food, for example, some good sites to link to yours would be pet toys, dog training, dog grooming, etc. Acquiring a lot of links that don’t relate to your site not only doesn’t help your search engine ranking, it will hurt it, because the search engines will assume you are trying to fool them into thinking your site is popular with a lot of “junk” links. Don’t worry, there are lots and lots of relevant sites to do reciprocal linking with.

The number one ranking for any search term isn’t entirely determined by the number of links to a site, but it is an important factor. And, as you know, having a ranking in the top ten for a search term will guarantee more visitors to your site. But in addition to improving your chances of being found through search engines, having links to your site on lots of other sites means you will get exposure to many site visitors who look at the links page or links section of a site for other related sites to visit. And, the more places your name and site name pop up, the more you are likely to be recognized as an authority on the topic of your site.

So how do you go about building reciprocal links on your site?

First of all you need to realize that reciprocal link building is an ongoing process, not a one shot deal. It needs to be something you continue to work on, although some of it can be automated. You will want to build a links page on your site, where you will place links to other sites which are also linking to you. Since you expect your links page to grow, you should establish separate link categories, all relating to the theme of your site. You can get an inexpensive script for creating and managing a link directory at Linking101.com, not to mention a lot of good, general information about linking.

On your links page, be sure to include simple instructions for anyone who wants to link with you. Many sites include a short piece of HTML code including all your link information, ready to be placed on the reciprocal sites links page. Be sure to place an easily-found link to your links page on the main page of your site as well.

Now you are ready to go looking for relevant link partners, sites that are complementary to yours, but not competitors. You can do it the manual way, by doing searches on your site’s favorite keywords. When you find a site, evaluate it for content relevant to your own, evaluate its quality and note its search engine rank. If you have to choose between a site that is ranked #2 and one that is #20, always choose the higher ranked site. Look for the links page, where you should find instructions on initiating links between your sites. If you don’t find one, it usually isn’t worth your time to contact the webmaster to inquire about links; go to the next one.

One method to speed up the process is to use a free service from http://linkpopularity.com/. From this site you can check the link popularity of your site. But, you can also check which sites are linked to your competitors - particularly your competitors with the high search engine ranking. With that information, you can go to each of these sites and most likely get a reciprocal link. A similar product, Link Survey, is available at http://www.antssoft.com/linksurvey/index.htm.

Another system for speeding up the process is http://links4trade.com/. Although not free, it also helps to manage the headache of link page maintenance.

Link exchange services which claim to completely automate the link exchange process can be found at http://www.powerlinks.com/ and http://www.softbizscripts.com/link-exchange-script-features.php.

A quite amazing tool you might look at is called Zeus, at http://www.cyber-robotics.com/index.htm. Zeus is an intelligent robot that builds a link directory and creates reciprocal links for your web site. A free version is available. You can also find a group of Zeus users ready to swap links at http://www.zeuscollective.com/.

Regardless of how you do it, continue to pursue reciprocal links and make it a part of your overall marketing strategy; you are sure to find it rewarding!

This is a REAL IN-DEPTH review of the SEO Elite version 3.2 software that is currently out. Every claim I make here is 100% accurate, and you can even verify the results yourself.

I started up my Central Florida Surf Report website in January 2005. I was receiving around 40 unique visitors a day from word-of-mouth traffic. Being out of the website design business for about 2 years, I didn’t even know what Google PageRank was. I had no idea that backlinks with anchor text was what ran the search engines nowadays.

After realizing this by reading on the forums over at GeekVillage I decided I better get jumping on my link campaign. I started going around the internet in search engines and e-mailing potential link partners that had the same basic content as my website.

Many of the people liked my website design and content, thus giving me a high trade link success rate. In my niche ’surfing’ or ’surf reports’ most of the webmasters aren’t out to get money or take your search engine rankings, so it was actually a little easier getting backlinks.

For about 4 months I was manually doing this by hand and only got up to around 250 backlinks in MSN and Yahoo!. Hardly any backlinks were showing in Google, but everyone knows that Google doesn’t show the correct amount of backlinks. Even right now it shows link:www.cflwaves.com as having ONE backlink.

In June, I finally decided that I was over the process of manually finding the link partners. I started using the program Arelis and was amazed at the ease of use finding new link partners. I DID NOT like the fact that the program didn’t show me any of the pages PageRank though. I only used Arelis for about 3 days, getting around 25 backlinks.

I started searching around in the internet for an alternative and stumbled into SEO Elite by Brad Callen. I downloaded the demo and was amazed at the results I was getting. I had picked up about 50 backlinks in only 2 days of use. Then I saw Brad introduced the new Project 8: Find and Submit Using Link Submission Forms.

After watching Brad’s tutorial videos on this new project, I IMMEDIATELY went and purchased the product. After the first day I had already picked up 50 new backlinks using this new feature.

The keyphrase that I was targeting was ‘Central Florida Surf Report’. If you check MSN, I am ranked #1. If you check Yahoo! I am ranked #1. If you check Google I am still ranked #3 but I am pretty sure after the next Google update I will be #1. The cool thing about it is that since I was targetting ‘Central Florida Surf Report’, it eventually rolls over to ‘Florida Surf Report’. On MSN I am #1 for ‘Florida Surf Report’. On Yahoo! I am #1 for ‘Florida Surf Report’. On Google I am #15, but this should also go up the next Google update. Rolling over again, it eventually turns into ’surf report’, currently on MSN I am ranked #13 for this keyphrase. It is very exciting to watch all my work actually pay off.

My traffic has tripled since January, and this month (August) I am expecting to receive from 11,000 - 12,000 unique visitors. Pretty good for a surf report website where all I do is update the surf report daily and forecast every few days right? This website is currently earning me over $600 a month in Adsense revenue, and that is increasing every month.

It is important to note that not all of your traffic comes from the search engines. When you are trading links with other websites, you also receive traffic from their websites, so the more backlinks you have, overall the more people you have!

These results are all due to the SEO Elite software by Brad Callen. Now here is my detailed project by project review of his software:

Project 1: Analyze backlinks using a specified search engine
________

This project allows you to analyze your competitors search engine backlinks using any of the major search engines. The program will show you what anchor text people are linking to them with, the IP address of the website, the PageRank of the website, the Alexa Rank of the website, the Page Title that the link is on, how many outbound links the page has, and how many total links the page has. This project also shows you in an easy list how many PR0-10’s and their percentage that are linking to the site. It is kind of hard to explain so here is the format:

PR = 0 520.1%
PR = 1 810.5%
PR = 2 1313.3%
PR = 3 4543.3%
PR = 4 2420.4%
PR = 5 1210.2%
PR = 6 43.7%
PR = 7 00.0%
PR = 8 00.0%
PR = 9 00.0%

(Not my site’s statistics.)

Project 2: Find and Email High Page Rank Link Partners
________

This is my favorite project of the whole program. It lets you find and email people that have atleast the minimum PageRank that you specify. You can find sites based on sites that link to your competitor, based on a search term, or from a links page - such as if your competitor has a long links page, and you want them all to link to you as well.

All you have to do is start the project, then load up one of your e-mail templates, select multiple e-mail addresses from the list and SEO Elite will send an e-mail to every single one of them. None of the receivers know that you have also sent that e-mail to another person. You can also customize your site templates to include the receiver’s name and website URL, so that the emails do not look machine generated.

Project 3: Analyze allinanchor, allintitle or allintext.
________

This project allows you to enter a keyword and analyze the top 10 ranking for allinanchor, allintitle, or allintext.

Allinanchor shows you the top number of websites with that particular keyword in their anchor text. If you are ranked #1 for allinanchor, you should soon be ranked #1 for that certain keyword.

Allintitle shows you the top number of websites with that particular keyword in their tags.

Allintext shows you the top number of websites with that particular keyword in the body of their webpage.

SEO Elite allows you to compare the allinanchor, allintitle, and allintext with the actual results, frame by frame.

Project 4: Verify that link partners are still linking back.
________

I personally do not use this feature of SEO Elite, but some of you may find it very valuable.
What you do is give SEO Elite the location of your links page, SEO Elite will then crawl the links page getting the websites out of it. SEO Elite then visits all of those pages checking to see if your link is still on their website. If it isn’t the program will tell you and you can send them an e-mail asking them what happend to your link.

Project 5: Find out where your site is ranked for a given keyword(s):
________

This project allows you to see where you are ranked for certain keywords on every search engine. SEO Elite saves the results and shows you a comparison from the past times that you have checked. This is great to show you how much SEO Elite has helped your search engine rankings.

Project 6: Find out how many webpages are indexed.
________

This project allows you to enter any domain name then the program will check each major search engine and return how many pages from that domain are indexed. Great time saver.

Project 7: Find well optimized websites.
________

This project shows you what the top 10 are doing to get their rankings. You enter a certain keyword and it returns the top 10 and then analyzes them based on certain factors:

Page PR
Alexa Rank
# of Top 10’s
Total Appearances
Total Score
I also do not use this project very much at all, I think I have only used it 3 times.

Project 8: Find and submit using link submission forms.
________

This is the greatest project of SEO Elite next to Find and Email High PageRank partners. What this project does is allow you to enter a certain keyword, select the number of websites that you want to exchange links with, and click submit. The program will find related websites to yours that have setup an automatic link exchange script.

All you have to do is enter your information into the SEO Elite program and each website that you select to trade links with, the program will automatically fill in the required fields for every website. All you have to do is click submit! Excellent feature, and a great time saver.

Overall I think that this is the greatest SEO program on the internet today. No other program has the amount of features that SEO Elite does. I think that this is a MUST-HAVE for any webmaster trying to market their website. This program is responsible for almost every visitor that I receive on my website. I give it a 10/10.

Joseph Tierney is a surfer, internet marketer, and a 2005 high school graduate. The rest is self-explanatory.
Although not all search engines bother with these tags it is important that you include them for the engines that do use them.

You can always get them done free online at http://www.submitcorner.com/Tools/Meta/

The title tag is the important one, it’s your shop window if you like. Target the right keywords or phrase as I showed you in part one, (you can still view it http://www.small-website-advice.com/wordpress/) and be sure to include it in your title tag for maximum effect. If every page has a different description in the title tag at the top of the page you can expand the number of searches you can compete for

More tips with tags

Another title tag is the tag you can use after a url such as this

a href=”http://made-up-name.com” title=”here is the result” target=”_blank” The title tag (in between opening and closing tags)

If you hover over the resulting link you will see “here is the result”, if this phrase were in your keywords list then this would also count with the search engines.
Make the page loads up in a new window by using the “target=”_blank” command, that way your visitor stays with you.

Use the “alt” tag that you can use when adding links to pictures, for example;

img
src=”yourpicture.gif”
width=”150″
height=”100″
alt=”another keyword here”(in between opening and closing tags)

Adding your keywords in these places will add more weight to your site, you should hopefully see an improvement in your position.

Basic Page Design

The first thing about page design is that search engines read web pages from the top left-hand corner down. Why is this important? Well, the placing of your keywords (yep! Them again) is vital, you should have at least one in-between h1 /h1 tags and if possible at the top of the page. As well as this you should have any ads such as google on the right hand side of the page, keeping your content on the left-hand side.
An even scattering of keywords in your page text should help and you should have a keyword near the end of the page.

Don’t have to many pictures if you can help it, most browsers’ only load 4 pictures at a time and this can seriously slow down the page load time and put people off your site. You are better off having pictures on inside pages where your visitors are happier to wait; they do after all want to see your products.

Avoid garish colours, flashing banners and masses of text that you don’t need, you don’t want to scare your potential customers away or lead them to another person’s website via an ad before you get them to view your site.

Most of all you should get you page scrutinised by a friend who is going to be honest with you, or find a forum that will do a constructive site review for you, you can find a forum like this here.
The eyes of another person will not be tainted with the same “this is my baby” eyes that you have as the designer.

That’s it for now, next time we move on to talk about advertising.

Mark white has been involved in IT for 16 years and has been active in internet marketing and web design for 5 years.

For help and advice please visit small-website-advice.com

Fri 28 Dec 2007

Gaining Link Popularity Techniques
Posted by admin under Living With SEO
Comments Off

Link popularity is very important these days for all websites since most
major search engines look at link popularity has a tool for ranking your site in there search results as well as the quality of your websites content keyword wise. Link popularity is a great way to gaining targeted visitors to your website. This article is going to show you easy and free and effective ways to increase your websites link popularity.

The purpose of having a website is to get visitors to your website to enable
you to reach you websites goal that maybe to make a sale of your product or
service.

here are a couple of free and effective ways to increase your websites link
popularity and the best thing it is free.

1) Submit your website to directories - Directories are by far the
most popular way to increase any websites link popularity since they are so many
directories out there and they are usually free for any webmaster to add there
website url. You need to find directories that pass Google page rank and that
are search engine friendly you can find this out usually by looking at links
that are on the directory that have direct links websites not a redirecting url.
A example of such directory is mine Sorve.com Directory

Directories are also great for gaining highly targeted visitors to your
website if you submit your site in the right category since people actually
search directories to find relevant websites to what they are searching for.

2) Forum Signatures - This is another method you gaining link
popularity this can be dine by link to your website from your signature in the
forum. Make sure you hyperlink your website to the main keyword’s that your
website relates to e.g. Search Engine
Directory

3) Link Exchanges - This is another popular way to increase any
websites link popularity by exchanging website links with relevant websites to
yours this is a hard way to gain link popularity but it has been made easy to
exchange links with sites by link exchange sites such as linkexchanged.com or
linkmarket.net but you can also ask website owners to link with your site by
just emailing the webmaster in most cases they will like to link with you if you
have a there link already on your link exchange page and if they find your
website useful to there viewers.

4) Writing Articles - writing articles that enable other website
owners to publish them o there website is another way to gain link popularity
like what I have done. This you will have a Authors biography or resource box on
the bottom of your article that contains your websites link so when someone
publishes your article on your website you will gain a nice one-way link to your
website and also if your readers find your article interesting they are most
likely going to checkout your website.

5) Link To Us - provide a page on your website for people that find
your website interesting to add your website link to your website here is a
example http://www.sorve.com/link.html (Link To Us).

6) Just Ask - Ask anyone that owns a website you know just to add you
link or add just add a couple of lines to your website such as: “Please help us
by add our link to your site” Hyperlink it to your link to us page or link
exchange page.

These are most probably most common ways for you to increase your website
link popularity and gain more visitors from those links or from search engines.
So start gaining links to your website and get the traffic that you deserve.

Good Luck

Martin has been making a living with affiliate revenue for the past couple of
years you can by joining Martin’s
Webmasters Newsletter
for free.

Add your website links for free to
Sorve.com Directory and also Search Engine Directory

Sat 22 Dec 2007

Ways to avoid or shorten your time in the Google Sandbox
Posted by admin under Living With SEO
Comments Off

Mr SEO’s suggestions for getting out of the sandbox faster.

What is the Google sandbox? Some people may disagree that there
is such a thing, but the Google sandbox does exist.. Here I will
talk about what the Google sandbox is and ways to help avoid it,
or, at the very least, shorten your time in it. What is the
Google Sand box? The Google sandbox is a filter that appeared
around March 2004. Your site may be indexed within a few weeks
of submission, however, it may not rank for any keyterms for
several months. This period of purgatory, if you will, is
un-affectionately referred to as “the sandbox”. The reason for
the delay is that Google is doing it’s best to make sure your
site is not using any methods that they feel would constitute
spamming. They want to be sure that your site is of a quality
nature and useful for some purpose. Google may also use this
time to see what you are doing in relation to your site. Are you
adding content? What kind of content is it? Are you building
backlinks? Are they one way or reciprocal? Who is linking to you
and are they related to what your site is about? Let’s take a
new build as an example. We register the domain then build the
site and submit it to search engines and wait for it to be
indexed. But…what if we wanted to speed the process up? How
could we go about doing so?

We know that Google loves domains that have been around a while.
Unfortunately, we just built our site from scratch, so
everything is new. Here’s the best way to cut down the time
frame for getting indexed:

While our site is being built, we create and place 3- 6 pages of
real content on the site. When I mean real, I mean readable
content related to our site. No one will be visiting our site
but we want the search engines to start indexing it site as soon
as possible. For that to happen, we will need some content. We
want to show the search engines that our site is about quality
from the start. The design of the site should be a secondary
concern and can always be tweaked later on. Google wants to know
about what you have to offer them in terms of content, so let’s
show them. While our site is waiting to be spidered, there are
additional steps we can take. We can start working on backlinks.
Link exchanges are alright in my book, but no substitute for
links created through quality content. There are many reasons
why articles about topics related to our business should be
written and submitted, the least of which are the quality one
way links they will create. Let’s say we write a few generalized
articles about the types of products or services we will be
selling on the site. Now we are one step ahead of the game. We
have created articles that will help build backlinks and
advertised our site as well. Another thing we can do is to plan
our submission to Google right after a Page Rank update.
Planning a time frame for our site’s indexing is important.
Updates happen roughly every 3 months. We need to plan our site
launch and indexing for the time immediately after an update. If
we launch in the middle or towards the end of an update, we’ll
miss out on any links we have worked on. It will be at least
another 3 months before we can earn some PR, so we need to plan
our site launch time wisely. Another thing we can do is to allow
Google to find our site first. How do we go about doing this? If
we can find a site with a decent PR (let’s say 4), that doesn’t
have many links going out and get them to link to us once our
domain is registered, Google will get to our content pages as
fast as we can post them.

My business partner and I recently created the site
http://www.articleuniversity.com . The domain was purchased and
the site built in 2 weeks time. I linked from my blog to the new
site and made sure we had content in place as soon as I set it
up. After only a few weeks, it is ranking #50 for “free article
submissions” on Google. Granted, all my pages aren’t indexed and
I have a Page Rank of 0…but the point still stands. I have
been working on one way backlinks, so by the next update I
should have at least a PR 3 or 4. This will help boost my
rankings and by then all my pages should all be indexed and
start ranking for keyterms. The point is that it didn’t take
three months to get indexed. There is more that can be done than
to reduce the amount of time spent in the sandbox, but these
basic steps will certainly help to get your site indexed faster.

Mon 17 Sep 2007

When to Hire a Professional SEO Firm?
Posted by admin under Living With SEO
Comments Off

In efforts to increase sales and profitability, more and more companies are turning to online marketing initiatives – specifically, search engine optimization. Search Engine Optimization or (SEO) is the art and science of blending technical and marketing skills together into a finely tuned website that is both search engine-friendly, ranks well for specific keywords and phrases, and is tailored to your audience from a buyer and seller perspective.

According to a recent U.S. study, only 20% of all businesses outsource search engine optimization programs to professional SEO firms. The remaining 80% either do not conduct search engine optimization at all or they believe they have the resources and skills to do it in-house. Of this 80%, it is probable that 90% of these companies can’t be found on the web – they don’t exist. In order to generate any amount of significant web visibility, your website must typically rank within the top-30 results.

So, the question comes down to what is in your company’s best interests?

Conduct your SEO program in-house or out-source it. To answer this question, let’s first take a look at the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to implement and maintain a successful search engine optimization program.

SEO knowledge and skills required

1) Basic understanding of how search engines and directories work.

This may seem overly obvious, but you would be amazed how many people do not understand how they actually work. This knowledge provides the foundation for your SEO program.

2) Website design

Although SEO is not completely a technical marketing process, it does require a fair amount of technical knowledge of what constitutes search engine-friendly web design. Certain web design elements can either help your search engine rankings or hurt them. You simply have to know which is which.

3) SEO experience

This is the most important and most difficult knowledge to obtain. If you have never implemented a SEO program, then you are in for a big surprise. Search engine optimization programs require a lot of research and are extremely time consuming. Most importantly, they require actual SEO experience. This means knowing what SEO strategies and tactics work and which ones don’t.

In-house vs. out-sourced SEO programs

If your company is considering conducting your search engine optimization program in-house, here are some questions to consider.

Who will be responsible for analyzing, developing, implementing and measuring the success of your SEO program?

Is this considered the role of your IT department, Marketing department or some other individual(s) within your company?

Do they have the time, knowledge, and resources to successfully implement and maintain your search engine optimization program? And do they really care if it works or not?

IT Department

Typically your IT department handles multiple daily tasks from trouble-shooting your company’s LAN or WAN to fixing the sales department’s laptops? Out of a busy IT person’s day, what priority and focus do you think he or she will commit to for your SEO program? And even if your IT department has some skills in web design or development, these skills make up only a small percentage of the knowledge required for a successful search engine optimization program.

Marketing Department

Typically, your marketing department juggles many marketing projects at once and faces strict completion deadlines. From handling new print collateral campaigns to getting ready for new product or service launches, marketing personnel’s time is spread very thin. In addition, how knowledgeable is your marketing department in the technical aspects of web design and search engine optimization? Do they have the time to become well-versed? Do they have sufficient internal resources? Often the answer to both questions is no, they do not.

Other individual(s) within your company

Ok, so the responsibility falls onto someone outside of your Marketing or IT department. Who will that be and why are they responsible for your SEO program? Providing these individuals with a new “project of the month,” will typically result in another check mark off of their monthly to-do list and frustration by top management of why their website is not producing any sales results.

Summary

From a business standpoint, it makes sense to try to leverage internal resources to maximize your company’s productivity and profitability – whenever possible. However, there must be a line drawn in the sand between knowing what your organization’s capabilities are and what they are not.

As you can see, there is more to search engine optimization than meets the eye. In order to implement and maintain a SEO program, you must acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources. This can be done by hiring a professional search engine optimization firm. Professional SEO firms have dedicated resources and experience to support your company’s web marketing initiatives. By leveraging their experience and know-how, your company can quickly and more efficiently implement a successful search engine optimization program.

About The Author

Corey Wenger is owner of Key Position Web Marketing and is a professional Search Engine Optimizer and Consultant who has over three years of experience in helping companies increase sales and profitability through strategic web marketing programs. More often than not, people are asking about methods used to improve Search Engine rankings: what works, what doesn’t, and what will get you in trouble.

Search Engine*:

A program that searches documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords were found.

Algorithm*:

A formula or set of steps for solving a particular problem.

Frankly, no one can predict what will happen from day to day with the Search Engines. Only the Search Engine companies themselves know if the algorithms will change from one day to the next. Even the Search Engine rules change from month to month, sometimes daily. Think of the changes that have happened since pay for inclusion and pay-per-click have taken over the market for Search Engine results.

It seems so simple to try and comply with the Search Engine rules. Even though optimization adds to the basic content of a site and source code, there are ways to approach this without stepping over the line.

We personally do not use the methods mentioned below (methods to avoid, methods to be wary of) in order to play it the absolute safest way, using a long term plan in providing you optimum ranking in the Search Engines.

Methods to avoid

* Keyword stuffing. “Stuffing” keywords into places where keywords don’t belong, such as comment tags, image ALT tags where the keywords have nothing to do with the specific image

* Invisible text. Text color the same as background color

* Automated submissions. Using automated tools to deliver huge numbers of pages to submission pages of Search Engines

* Submissions to “thousands” of Search Engines. A waste of time, since the major Search Engines/Directories drive the majority of the traffic to websites

* FFA (free for all) links. Link popularity is good, but only when the links are relevant; a link from a page of random links is not worth nearly as much as a link from a site that is relevant to your site

* Search Engine Marketing companies hosting your pages on their server. The marketing company “owns” your pages, and if you decide you want to move them, you may have a hard time wresting them away. (This is not always the case with marketing companies that also provide hosting, but you need to carefully choose when using this option.)

Methods to be wary of

* Cloaking

* Doorway pages

* Maintenance programs

Cloaking*:

Also known as stealth, a technique used by some Web sites to deliver one page to a Search Engine for indexing while serving an entirely different page to everyone else.

Cloaking is very difficult to do correctly, if you do not have an expert providing this service you could well be banned by the Search Engines. There are ways for this to be done that are accepted by some Search Engines. In general, cloaking is not always accepted by the Search Engine rules and can be a gamble unless you are certain your service provider knows what they are doing. Check credentials and get referrals from people who have used their services.

Doorway page**:

A page made specifically to rank well in Search Engines for particular keywords, serving as an entry point through which visitors pass to the main content.

Doorway pages are not accepted as they used to be by the Search Engines. A carefully crafted doorway page done by hand is entirely different from an automated doorway page generated by software. A few well-designed pages are a far cry from mass generated automated pages sent in large numbers through the Search Engine submission page, which are often considered as spam. Again, check credentials and get referrals from people who have used their services.

Maintenance programs

There are times when a page drops from the Search Engine listings or you re-design the page which might give you a reason to re-submit the page to the Search Engine. Re-submitting your pages every month is not always necessary. Having a log stats program in place will help you see which pages are still listed, along with a monthly ranking report. If you have these tools you should be able to see if any of your pages have changed. Be wary of people who consistently re-submit your pages, since re-submission can sometimes cause your pages to be dropped if they are already listed in the database.

My own experience with a very large website I did Search Engine marketing for, showed that the older (longer) the pages were in the Search Engine results, the better for link popularity and ranking. Of course, paid inclusion can give you more security in having your web pages stabilized in the Search Engine results.

A good maintenance plan will include providing consultation, a ranking report, tweaking keywords in your source code as needed for a monthly/six month/yearly fee and may also include log stats so you can see where your traffic is coming from and what keywords your visitors are using to visit your website.

Methods that work

Good content
Content is one of the most important items you need for your website. Once visitors arrive, you need to keep them there. Adding keyword-rich text that makes sense and serves the concept of the web page improves your ranking and keeps your visitors interested. The more text, the better for Search Engine spiders when they index a website.

Good navigation
There is nothing worse than arriving at a website and having difficulty understanding where to go for the information you are seeking. Have easy to use, clearly marked navigation so your visitors click through instead of click-away in frustration. Search Engine spiders (robots) index text and links; having good navigation is important to the indexing of your web pages.

Title/META tags
Individualized Title and META tags for each of your important web pages gives you the best chance for optimum success in ranking. Title tags are necessary for Search Engine ranking, in particular with Google’s Search Engine. META tags have decreased in importance, but are worth using for clarity and search results. The META description is still used by some Search Engines as the default text indexed by Search Engine spiders for the search results. The keyword tag is the least important but is still used by some engines. My theory is, you never know when the rules of the Search Engines will change, or a new engine will want them, so take the time to include these tags in all your web pages.

Link popularity
Links from other popular websites back to your website are one way of increasing your site’s popularity. Finding websites with similar content (but not your competitors) and high link popularity, then trading links to be posted on each site, is one way of increasing your site popularity. Good content is vitally important because visitors who stay longer while visiting a website help measure the popularity of the site in the Search Engines.

Paid Inclusion
Paying a one-time fee or (as is most recently the case) a yearly renewable subscription fee to be included in the Search Engine results. Directories also use this style of service to accept submissions. Paid inclusion does not guarantee that you will be listed with the Search Engine or Directory, but gives a shorter time-line of acceptance if they do.

PPC (Pay-Per-Click)
Overture is the most popular PPC engine. You bid an amount per keyword phrase to get the highest ranking in the Overture search results compared to your competitors.

Google AdWords Select
Google AdWords is a program that uses your chosen keywords in an ad in the Google Search Engine results in order to promote click-throughs.

Log Stats programs
Having a log stats program is very helpful in tracking your visitors, finding which keywords they are searching on to enter your website, tracking which pages they leave from and much more. Analog is a good free log stats program. WebTrends is a popular paid logs program used by many businesses.

Free submissions take patience
After paying for inclusion, try submitting to some of the secondary Search Engines and directories. Long before Google was a household word, I thought it might become popular and submitted the company website. It certainly paid off a year later when Google became the best of the upcoming Search Engines.

Another avenue to venture down are specialty directories. As the web grows larger over time, specialty directories (also known as vertical portals or “vortals”) focused on your business area may help you get more link popularity and your company name out to the public.

Stay Honest

Stay honest, create good content and do your homework when hiring for services. Using affordable Search Engine Marketing services you will add to your audience exposure on the web. In this way you will always be ahead of the game and hopefully, ahead of your competitors.

*definitions supplied from Webopedia website: http://www.webopedia.com/

**definition supplied from Marketing Terms.com website: http://www.marketingterms.com/

Daria Goetsch is the founder and Search Engine Marketing Consultant for Search Innovation Marketing, a Search Engine Marketing company serving small businesses. This directory is not a robot driven spider, but a human edited directory and you must observe a few important points if your submission is to be successful.
<p1.Make sure that your site has original content.
<pIf you are only publishing a collection of affiliate links or if your site is a clone of other sites that are plentiful on the web, then your submission is likely to be rejected. If you are dealing with affiliate products you can of course add content, such as product reviews or additional information and thus show the editors that your site has something original to offer.
<p2. Check your site for spelling errors and in general, make sure that your site looks good.
<pThough the editors are looking for original content, they are only human and will be annoyed by errors and by a clumsily built site. It is my experience that professionally designed sites, with good content, always make it into the directory eventually (more on the time factor later).
<p3. Be sure to put your contact information on the web site.
<pAn e-mail address is not enough. I spoke to one editor and he told me that if he doesn’t see a physical address or telephone number then the entrants in his category “are toast.” Especially if you are selling something, you need to build credibility with your customers, and in this case, with the Open Directory editors, by giving proper contact information.
<p4. Choose the right category for your submission.
<pWhen you submit a URL to a robotic search engine there is not much to think about, but whenever you submit to a directory an important part of that submission is choosing a proper category. Go online and see where sites similar to yours have been placed in the directory. When you find the category that you think is best, then press the add URL link. In some categories the editors put a note mentioning the restrictions for that category. Please heed these notes carefully and don’t submit to this category if your site doesn’t meet the criteria.
<p5. Record the date and category of your submission.
<pIt is good to keep a record of when you submitted and to what category you submitted your site. If your category has an editor make a note of who the editor is. This information will be useful if you need to make an inquiry about the status of your submission. How long does it take to get listed? I have had one site listed within two weeks of submission and I have also waited eight months for other sites
<p6. Don’t spam the Directory!
<pSubmit your site one time and be patient. Generally you are only allowed to submit to one category, though if your site is huge and has many subdivisions, you may be able to submit sections of the site to different categories. It takes time for entries to be processed, especially in categories where there are many submissions. If you hastily resubmit your site, then it will end up on the bottom of the list of sites to be reviewed, as they are stored according to date.
<p7. Contact the Directory through proper channels if you have questions about your submission

<pIf the category where you submitted has an editor, it will be indicated at the bottom of the page, and you can send him or her a message. Another excellent way to make contact with the editors is through their online forum locate at http://resource-zone.com/ubbthreads.php .There you can ask about the status of your submission, but you must give them the date and category to which you submitted your site. You can ask questions about the procedures etc, but one more thing, don’t argue with the editors. Find out how the editors of the directory work and do your best to meet their conditions and you will be successful.

About The Author

Donald Nelson is a web developer, editor and social worker. Don’t let it cause you stress or anxiety, simple read on…

Google, MSN, and Yahoo all use their own formulas to calculate the relevance of your pages, but here are a few common factors to guarantee you will rank above those not using them.

Start analyzing your pages today, don’t forget to resubmit the changes when you are done, and the traffic will start to flow.

1) Keyword Density

You should strive to obtain a keyword density in the 3.5 to 7 percent range for each of your pages. Do not overuse your keywords on the same page, instead simply use related keywords.

2) Keyword Phrase Choices

A single keyword is almost impossible to rank high for, so you should shoot for lower demand phrases. Overture lists the keyword “coffee” as being searched 370820 times per month. The keyword coffee has a huge amount of competition, but a keyword phrase such as “coffee club” is only searched 1813 times. Of course ranking number one for coffee would be fantastic, but ranking well for many lower demand keywords should be an important part of search engine optimization strategies.

3) Original Content

Google will tend to penalize sites offering the same content resulting in lower ranking for all sites. Think about all the sites you have seen promoting the same resale rights product. They all have the same sales page. The best thing you could do is to simply rewrite the sales letter and submit that page to the search engines. This is an incredibly important Search Engine Optimization tip. Try to work in related words and phrases not just the top keywords.

4) Proper Linking

Make sure all your links use proper text. How many times have you seen “click here to visit” on a website? Simply changing the link text will cause your page to rank higher in all the search engines. You can also choose related phrases for link text.

5) Repeat Keywords and Phrases

Always make sure that your selected keywords and phrases appear several times in each of your paragraphs. Try to add related keywords and phrases to help boost your SEO. Do not get involved with keyword stuffing (repeating the same keywords over and over), and make sure to leave some space between keyword occurrences (once every second or third line)

5) Stay Current
Visit SEO news sites to stay current with the latest trends. The engines are always changing their strategies and formulas so it is a good idea to read the latest news at least once a week. A great place to start is http://www.seo-buzz.com

6) Alt Tags

When adding a photo or picture to your pages you should always add relevant keywords to the alt tags. This helps to boost your page rank with little work.

Taking the time to review your site, make the necessary changes, and staying current on the latest trends in SEO will help ensure that you achieve a top ranking site for your chosen keywords and key phrases.

The author is a internet research specialist with an interest in hypnosis.
