Living With SEO

It’s the buzz word’s going across the internet marketing guru’s strategy
platform at the moment…Google’s Sitemap to index your web pages
within days if not hours.

This new system will revolutionize how marketers will now be able
to submit an xml file of their website pages direct to Google and work
along side the mega giant search engine to provide detailed information
regarding the total amount of your websites pages and how often they are updated.

Googles aim is to cut down the time and sheer volume load of work its spiders
has to perform to keep its search engine listings up to date with all the current
websites that are evolving on an ever-increasing daily basis.

This of course allows all “savvy marketers” a great opportunity to index their
web pages with the full permission of Google and therefore get an immediate
presence and earning potential far quicker than was ever previously possible.

Of course processing an xml file of your website and its pages may have
presented a problem for most marketers, however even this problem has
now been overcome with the latest software offerings.

So if you’re looking to get your web pages indexed I would suggest you
take a look at this new technology and keep one step ahead of your competition.

Website optimization can be done in many ways. It
depends on the site owner how long he can wait for the result.
Some results can be fast but the problem is that those results
could not stay longer. But to stay longer in the search engine
organic SEO is the best way. Organic SEO requires time to take effect, just as it takes
time for your web pages to start showing up in the search engine
results. The very first reason to opt for the organic SEO is
that it is low cost and inexpensive as compared to the PPC. As
most of the searchers click the natural search engine results
rather than PPC. And other factor to improving your rankings
with natural search engine optimization is by boosting your
“Link Popularity” by acquiring or paying for links that point to
your web site.

These links give you lasting results by giving you top rankings
and traffic from the search engines. Plus, the links themselves
will provide a significant boost in long term traffic. Not only
that in the organic SEO you do the free submissions in the
directory. You don’t have to keep paying for this service
because, unless search engine databases drops your free
submission pages (which is not often these days), you will be
visible and present to the search engine users when they search
on your targeted keyword phrases. Over time you should see a
progression in your ranking, depending on how competitive your
keyword phrases are.

So the Organic SEO is the best and the most effective way for
the promotion of the site though the result may appear a little
late but it will be long lasting

In this three part article, you’ll find many tools that any webmaster can use to monitor your site’s search engine position, and use to increase the visibility of your site in major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

URL Trends
http://www.urltrends.com/

Most of the coverage I’ve seen focuses on the ability of UrlTrends to allow you to “View Any URLs Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, Popular Search Terms and Incoming Links”.

And that’s a great thing, to be able to see all of that from one place. But one great thing missed about this tool are that you can subscribe to changes to the results via RSS -hands off monitoring of your site.

Fagan Finder’s URL Info
http://www.faganfinder.com/urlinfo/

This online gadget is like the Swiss Army knife of site information, giving you one-page access to dozens of pertinent check-ups. But monitoring relevant search engine information like your backlinks, or the cached pages in a search engine are just the tip of the iceberg.

You can use URL Info to check that your HTML code is validated, translate your page, and if you’re a blogger, discover where your site is mentioned in the blogosphere.

Spannerwork’s Spider Simulator
http://www.spannerworks.com/spidersimulator.0.html

Ever wondered what your site looks like to the search engine spiders that crawl the web, looking for information to include in their databases? Go to this page to see what information is seen by the spider and what it skips over.

Spannerworks.com can also help you figure out how to troubleshoot content that seems like it should show up to a spider but doesn’t, with its HTTP viewer. They also have a tool that will analyze your keyword density.

GoRank.com’s Top Ten Comparison
http://www.gorank.com/seotools/

If you’ve been banging your head against the wall in an attempt to figure out why you haven’t hit the top ten results in Google, GoRank.com has a page that can give you important clues to help you figure it out. One of my favorites, the Top Ten comparison report, will scrub the raw data of the top ranking results for a given keyword.

In studying the results, you may find it easier to understand where your own optimization efforts are going wrong. Don’t forget to stop by Google for your API key at http://www.google.com/api as you’ll need it to create your free account.

Search Guild’s Keyword Difficulty Checker
http://searchguild.com/difficulty/

This one’s an old favorite of mine. When you find what you may think is an ideal keyword, before you start tweaking your pages, it’s a good idea to run it through this tester. Using the Google API, it analyzes whether or not a given phrase will be worth your efforts.

You’ll already have to be well-versed in how to find good keywords to plug into the tool, but once you have that nailed, it’s pretty reliable in telling you whether it’s worth your time to target that phrase. If you use flash on your site, check out the flash viewer on their utilities page as well.

In the next article in this series, you can read more about tools specific to Yahoo and Google that will help you track your rankings and study your site.

Normal wisdom says that if you use Flash in a web site it will
hurt your search engine placement. This is due primarily to
search engines having a hard time to index Flash content. But
with a little ingenuity we can use that very problem to our
advantage.

Let’s first take a look at how search engine indexing can cause
you problems on your web site.

Most web sites are built up of menus and context areas. The
menus are frequently text based, making them easy to update or
change. The content is dependent on our writing creativity. Both
of these can lead to search engine indexing trouble.

Search Engines look through the text on your pages, menus as
well as content and they create their index on what they find.
So far so good. But just how do the search engines do this? They
can’t look at your page and decide which is the main content
area visually, so they simply start at the top of the code and
work down.

If your site follows the standard pattern of a navigation bar on
either the top or down the left side of the page and uses a
table structure to achieve this, then your whole nav bar will be
read and indexed before your main content area. If your site has
a lot of variation then this shouldn’t be a problem. But what if
your site is focused on one subject and your navigation bar
tends to repeat words? As an example you may have a site that
sells watches and your nav bar may read like this: Men’s
Watches, Ladies Watches, Sport Watches, etc. You can see how
easy it is to repeat that word Watches.

Search engines like to give points to sites that contain
valuable content that is easily categorized and recognizable to
visitors, but they also take away points for keyword spamming.
In the above Watch example, the nav bar could easily cause your
page to be listed as a keyword spammer.

Here is the first Flash Trick to improve your ranking. Create
the navigation bar in Flash. This way all those repeating words
are now hidden from the search engine spiders. As an added
benefit the code taken up by the Flash will probably be less
than the code used in the text based nav bar. This will help the
search engine spiders to focus on the main content area of your
page.

Let’s now look at another common problem with search engine
indexing. In this example consider a shopping site selling the
same watches as in our previous example. Each watch page will
have a description of the individual watch, and that is fine.
But each page may also have “boiler plate” text as well. There
may possibly be a standard description for a particular watch
brand, or possibly warranty or shipping information included on
the page.

Another red flag that goes up for the search engine spiders is
text repeating from page to page. The more distinct each page is
the more likely the search engines will consider the text as
relevant. If there is too much repeated text, the search engines
may even drop all the pages that they believe have duplicated
text. Not a good situation, especially if you don’t want to be
forced into creating completely original text for every page on
your site.

Here is Flash Trick number two. Keep all the distinct content on
your pages as html text and convert any repeating text areas
into Flash files that are placed into the pages. This way, only
the distinct text is visible to the search engines and your
repeating text is hidden in the Flash file. Any text that you
tend to repeat from page to page is a prime candidate for the
Flash treatment.

So take a look through your web site. Do you have text menus
that use repetitive words? Do you use boiler plate text, or have
repeated text areas on several pages? If so you should let
Flash’s disadvantage of being search engine unfriendly become
your advantage on making a search engine friendly site.

#1 question when it comes to web advertising is how do I get top 10 search engine placements for the terms I wish to aquire?

Without getting into how to aquire #1 placements (Since there are virtually 100’s of articles explaining these techniques), let’s instead look into how companies who do end up aquiring them, never seem to loose them…

1st you must understand that search engines all over the world are battleing what seems like a never ending war to be able to provide the ultimate best results for a search.

So since this is true, search engines are consistently upgraded in order to improve their results. With upgrades come new content, with upgrades come loss of placements as well.

We all are consistently updating our sites to better fit search enignes results but at the same time, the top search engines are telling us to simply provide great relative content for your visitors. So why then do we ignore their wishes?

See what I’ve found through many up’s and down’s is that I had the ability to get the top placements all along. It was right under my nose the whole time.

Here it is… are you ready?…

Create your content for what you’re after and foget it! Move on, attack something else.

See, the reason why so many top companies never lose their precious placements is because they create very good content and then leave it up to search engines to find it, re-find and again re-find the same content.

Here’s what happens. The 1st time a search engine finds your content, they archive your information and keep going. Now that they have it archived, they come back time and time again to see if they can still provide viewers with that information.

If by chance you changed it in any way, search engines will ultimately have to re-archive the information again and start all over. This in turn is like “loosing interest” in your information at that time.

So a good rule of thumb is to leave your content the way it is in order to let search engines to have the opportunity to archive, double check and maybe tripple check your content relavance.

I guarantee you if you create it and forget it, create more and forget it and stick to that strategy, your bound to hit your target.

Keep up the good work!

My introduction to search engine optimization started in London
a few years back and, after experimenting with Web Position
Gold, I honed these skills to attain very good results in
promoting clients’ websites. Later, I discovered that link
building was a necessary but highly tedious monthly process.
This I still do to an extent, but today I am increasingly drawn
to article writing as the medium for promoting both ourselves
and our clients in the world of Web 2.0.

As a former sub-editor for a number of publications in London,
it is quite a stimulating pastime to research subjects that
interest me. It is also as a valuable means of gaining exposure
for our sites. So this year I will be writing for ourselves and
our clients through submitting relevant articles to high PR
websites; each will then provide us with valuable one-way links.

Also, these articles will appear in the WordPress section of our
website so as to syndicate the information further via our RSS
feed. As an aside, Google’s Adsense has been added to WordPress
and I am keenly aware that the use of high-paying keywords could
see some additional rewards for our efforts ― ’search
engine optimization’ ranking amongst the top performers.

According to www.weird-websites.com the top ten keywords are: 1)
213,259 paris hilton 2) 155,497 google 3) 124,016 yahoo 4)
121,086 ebay 5) 96,264 eminem 6) 96,262 britney spears 7) 94,014
mapquest 8) 93,708 tsunami 9) 90,841 girls 10) 90,334 89.com

So, submissions have almost been suspended to the free
directories and our monthly SEO programme is now much more
focused on article writing. They are not intended to only have
SEO value; they are being written to provide readers with
relevant and interesting content that may not be commonly
available elsewhere.

There seem to be a plethora of e-zines out there that accept
articles from writers, but I am concentrating on making
submissions to the following list that have PR rankings of 7

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is in the choice of keywords for a new site, specifically secondary keywords.. These are the words or phrases that you use when writing your content to help theme the page so that the search engines know what your page is about. These secondary keywords also help to bring in more traffic, because they add more depth to your page, meaning that your page is found for a lot more phrases than just the primary phrase you page is built around.

Let’s look at an example.

Suppose you were building a niche site on hemorrhoids.

One of your main pages is likely to be about treating hemorrhoids. Let’s use “hemorrhoid treatment” as our primary keyword phrase for this page (it has high searches, but also high competition, so secondaries are going to be working hard to get this page ranking high for related phrases).

So how do you find secondary keywords for use on this page? Surely there cant be many possible secondaries?

Well, you have a few options for finding secondaries. There is a paid service called Thememaster which a lot of marketers use for this purpose (search Google for this one if you are interested - I have not used it, so cannot recommend it). However, my own favourite method is using Keyword Results Analyzer. If you own it, you have all you need to find those secondaries.

I carried out research at Wordtracker for this niche, and imported them into KRA. One of the strengths of KRA is the filtering and reporting features. To find secondary keywords, I simply filter the phrases that contain the word “treat”. This will pull out all phrases containing treat, treatment etc. Since all phrases in my database are related to hemorrhoids, all phrases returned will be related to treating this condition.

KRA gives me 61 phrases that are searched for at the search engines related to hemorrhoid treatment. Now the difficulty is not how to find secondaries, it is how to choose from 61 related phrases (which is obviously too many for a single page).

Here are the 61 phrases:

If you used all of these phrases as they are, you would not only have a very large page, but you would have a very high density of certain words like treatment, treating. We obviously have to be very careful about not using a word too many times, so one of the useful features built into KRA is its unique keyword list report. This report shows you all of the unique words that make up a set of phrases. Here are the unique words that make up the above phrases:

alternative

What this list gives you is a set of keywords that you can use in your content where they make sense. By adding these words to your page, you can theme your page so that it matches lots of frequently searched for phrases.

For example, if you used these words:

treat
treating
treatment
treatments

on your page, you would have the chance to rank in Google for “treat hemorrhoids”, “treating hemorrhoids”, “hemorrhoid treatment” & “hemorrhoid treatments”.

By also using Mispelled variations of hemorrhoids highlighted in this list:

haemerroid
haemmaroid
haemmeroids
haemorrhoids
haemorroid
hemarroid
hemmoroids
hemorhoid
hemorrhoid
hemorrhoids
Hemorrihoid
hemorroids

together with the above treatment words, you can expect to be found for search phrases containing every combination of the mispellings when searched with a treatment phrase. That’s 48 different search phrases that your page could be found for.

Now, the above example is one I don’t necessarily recommend you follow, since all those mispellings may make your page read very badly. But you get the idea.

Perhaps a better use of this type of unique keyword list would be to target the treatment/cure style keywords.

This would not look unnatural:

alternative
Care
cure
cures
doctor
drugs
herbal
herbs
holistic
Laser
med
natural
symptoms
treat
treating
treatment
treatments

Add these into your content, together with a couple of alternative spellings, and you can have a page that can potentially rank well for large numbers of hemorrhoid treatment related phrases.

Imagine if you were a search engines, and after analysing your page for theme, you found the above words (and one or two spellings of hemorrhoid).

Would you have any difficulty deciding which theme the page was about?

Sometimes a search engine optimization company will miss that glaring question
posed by potential clients and assume the benefits of search engine optimization
are obvious to everyone. While shelling out a couple thousand on an SEO campaign
is common sense to some, others may find it hard to part with the cash unless they
know it is an investment in their business that is sure to bring a good return.

Search engines account for a huge portion of traffic to web sites. Data varies
depending on what sources you read, but the bottom line is that search engines are
used millions of times each day by consumers searching for goods and services.
And having your business displayed at the top of search results is essential if you
want to do any business from the major search engines. Nine in every ten users will
find what they’re looking for in the top 10 results and won’t go to page 2.

It’s obvious that people can make a lot of money from online sales, but how you
advertise your products has a large bearing on what kind of profit you make. If you
buy advertising space on Google AdWords or other services that charge per click,
you may only shell out 10 cents for every visitor to your site - But what if it takes
100 clicks to make one sale? If your products only sell for $10 a piece, then there is
no profit being made. Pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns will also never stop costing
you money. Search Engine Optimization, on the other hand, can be very affordable
over months and years.

Many SEO and Internet Marketing companies will say that ongoing maintenance is
needed to reach and keep top search engine rankings. While this is true, be careful
how the company says they do it. There is an affordable way and then there’s a way
to pad the pockets of the “experts.” For more on this issue, read my other article
entitled “What Constitutes a Complete and Effective SEO Campaign?” In short, the
affordable way will involve an intense content optimization followed by work to raise
link popularity. This link popularity development should be the bulk of any ongoing
maintenance. A couple times a year keyword research should be done again and the
content should be looked at. Search trends can sometimes fluctuate so you want to
make sure your content is still aimed at the right audience.

What is affordable and what isn’t varies greatly from company to company, industry
to industry. In the bed and breakfast industry, $30 per month may be enough to
keep a top 5 ranking on Google if the market is not very competitive. A web site
competing for a top spot in a database administration field may be looking at
several hundred a week if not more. The bottom line is, if you pick the right Search
Engine Optimization company, your return on investment from an SEO campaign
can be over 1000%.

While there are other ways to advertise a web site (No, search engine optimization is
not the be-all and end-all of online advertising) very few can match the wide
targeted audience and affordability that search engines provide.

John Metzler is the co-creator of Abalone Designs, Inc. http://www.abalone.ca, a Search

Is your website fully functional and tested without errors? If
not, and you have broken links or sections of your website that
cause errors it is important that you address these problems
immediately.

Not only will it look unprofessional for you from your
customers’ perspectives, but errors within your website can
detrimentally affect your search engine rankings. This is
especially prevalent with Google. Google seems to have little
tolerance for websites with errors where pages, images or links
don’t load, and we have seen websites that are ranking in the
top 10 quickly lose positioning and almost vanish from search
engine results.

If the website errors are due to web pages not loading where
they are linked correctly, you should take a look at the web
hosting company you are using in case:

- Their server is too slow for your website;

- Are their servers at capacity for the amount of websites
hosted on their servers?

- Or are their web servers unstable and go down quite often.

No matter what the reason; ask your web hosting company what
they are doing about it. If they don’t fix the problem quickly,
then find a new web hosting company. -don’t accept excuses where
they are not going to fix the problem in a timely manner- There
are a lot of hosting companies around, so there is no reason why
you should settle for poor quality.

While cost is not always indicative of whether or not a web
hosting company is going to provide a quality service -we have
seen expensive web hosting companies provide low quality hosting
services, and low cost companies provide high quality service-,
don’t just choose a cheap web hosting company thinking you may
save a couple of hundred dollars a year or so. If your site has
consistent errors, and you lose positioning in the search
engines then it will cost your business a lot more than a couple
of hundred dollars a year.

What do you need to do to find out if your website has errors?

- Manually check your website by having a few different users
navigate through it. Make sure all links work correctly, and
that all images are showing where they should be.

- Look at your web statistics reports to find out if any errors
are showing. If you don’t have these types of reports for your
website, change hosting providers straight away!

Increasing your web traffic and rank in search engines is probably one of your major goals, at least as far as your online business is concerned. One great way to increase your traffic and weight in the search engines is to submit to directories.

Submitting to directories is certainly a good plan if you are interested in increasing the number of links to your web page. As you may already know, the more links you have the higher search engines will rank your web page based on its popularity. This is one of the greatest benefits of submitting to directories because your site will receive many back links and carry a higher weight with the search engines. As a result, your site will be ranked higher by the search engines and have more links for people to click on and end up at your site.

Another benefit your site will enjoy by being listed in a directory is increased credibility. The reason being part of a directory increases credibility is because an actual person must review your site for quality content before it is listed in a directory. Because of this, when your site is listed in a directory web searchers immediately know your website provides relevant information and will be more likely to pay you a visit.

Both of these benefits of submitting to directories result in your ultimate goal, which is increasing traffic. Go ahead and start submitting to directories today and increase your links on the web as well as your credibility and enjoy the extra traffic and ranking.
