For many years I have supplied music for and played in bands that provide music for corporate entertainment. Clients have included Audi, The Evening Standard, Sainsburys, P.C. World, Safeways, Large corporate clients at Henley and Ascot, I.T.V. and H.M. Treasury. Because of this experience I felt it would be relevant in putting down some pointers in helping clients choose the right kind of music for their particular corporate entertainment.

Interestingly enough, most corporate hospitality entertainment work tends to require music as an ingredient to a larger recipe. What I mean by this is a great deal of corporate events are offering a multi service package. Typically an organization may be putting on an evenings entertainment to thank its workforce for a particularly successful year. They may be offering music, food, comedy, a close up magician, a casino and a caricaturist. The corporate client organizing needs to decide what part the music has to play in the days/evenings entertainment.

Questions he or she needs to ask are:

Is the music specifically for entertainment or is the music for background listening?

Do we need one style of music early on in the proceedings and then a change of style later in the days/ evenings entertainment?

Do you expect the corporate clients to be networking and discussing business or are they just there for a good time?

What overall atmosphere do you want to project with the event?

Is there going to be a change of location for the music as the entertainment event unfolds?

Different styles of music bands lend themselves to different corporate hospitality situations. Below are a number of typical corporate hospitality events with music suggestions for suitable music entertainment.

Corporate entertainment model 1.
Evening reception with dinner and speeches.
In a situation such as this you will typically need music from the outset as part of the meet and greet of the corporate evening. A four-piece swing or Latin group is ideal with a larger ensemble for particularly large gatherings. A professional outfit can pitch the music at just the right decibel level so your guests can talk and enjoy the entertainment without it encroaching on conversations. The musicians would typically be dressed in Lounge Suits or Tuxedos (or the female equivalent) to mirror what the guests are wearing themselves. The music portrays an atmosphere of sophistication, which again hopefully reflects the evenings overall ambience.

It is rare for corporate clients to want to dance especially as clients there relationship is business not pleasure! In most cases it is more important that the band is flexible in when it is needed over the course of the evening i.e. At the top of the night for the reception, a smaller version of the band (The pianist maybe for the dinner), stopping for speeches and then after the speeches to play until other entertainment is put on for the corporate clients. In this situation give the band a clear idea of how you expect the evening to go. What to wear, when they will be needed, when they need to get their instruments in the building and be set up, when breaks will be required, let them know if it is convenient or not to feed them and then finally how they can leave when finished so as not to disrupt the rest of the entertainment.

Corporate entertainment model 2.
Company Party.
Still corporate entertainment, still corporate hospitality but a totally different set of requirements for the music. Ask yourself these questions: Are your work force the type of workforce who will want to dance at some point in the proceedings? If they are, then a professional band with flexibility is essential. My experience is that people of all ages will join together to dance to music from the sixties and seventies. Whatever background music you require earlier in the day/evening be it Latin, Swing, Rat Pack or Lounge, if you are hoping to provide entertainment that will get people dancing remember this fact. Sixties and Seventies. For some inexplicable reason this is the music that gets people up on their feet.

When choosing your music ask the band if they can cover this part of the corporate entertainment requirement. Get samples of their music if need be. There is nothing worse than an ill equipped band struggling through alien repertoire. However good the band is, if they do not play the right repertoire, the right style of music then the corporate entertainment will fall on deaf ears.

Let me at this point provide a caveat. Your workforce work together They are not always going to be the best of friends however professional their relationships are at work. Answer truthfully, will they really want to dance together or is it asking too much? I would say that in all the years of providing music for this kind of corporate entertainment / hospitality , as long as the music is right, the workforce tended to dance 30 or 40% of the time. It could be said that a workforce who will enjoy each others company in this way is a reflection on the talent of senior management to create a happy team!

Corporate entertainment model 3.
Company Fun Day.
These come in two types. The type to entertain your own workforce or the type to entertain prospective clients. Both types of corporate entertainment require music that is fun. This means that the music must be perceived as fun and the band must be perceived as fun. In both cases Jolly Dixieland Jazz or the summer sounds of Latin music are most suitable.

Ask yourself these questions: does the band need to be mobile? Meaning do you want the music to move around the site at various points in the proceedings? If so then the jolly jazz route is most suitable. A good professional outfit of four or five players can play acoustically and move around a site as directed.

If the band can be static and close to electrical power then either Jolly Jazz or Latin Music is suitable.

Is the event outdoors or indoors and do you have provision for bad weather? This is England, never trust to luck, assume the worst! Any band that needs power cannot play in the rain for health and safety reasons. At the first hint of inclement weather a band will have to breakdown their equipment. Build this situation into your corporate entertainment music decisions.

How do you want the band to dress? It is a fun day after all! In the past I and my musicians have dressed as Elvis, Cavemen, Circus Clowns, in fact all manner of characters in the name of corporate entertainment and corporate hospitality. Good bands will have suitable outfits for most situations but don`t hesitate in providing something off the wall for a special event. Most professional players have a strange urge to jump into such costumes at the earliest possibility! As someone who has played at a nudist camp and for a toga party, both dressed accordingly, take my word for it!

To draw this article together let me say this. Choose the right kind of music for the event. Brief the band accordingly but make sure you have a professional and flexible outfit, things can change over the course of the event and you want to make sure the band are both co-operative and able to fulfill your needs. Don`t hesitate to ask the band for any special requirements you have. Do it in plenty of time so they have time to prepare.

The corporate entertainment and hospitality you offer to your guests reflects directly onto your company. The music and musicians must be the type who are aware of this. Dont go for second best just to save a small amount of money. You need a well prepared, well dressed band who are both polite and charming to your guests. They need to play the right kind of music for the event in order to help make the day or evenings corporate entertainment a resounding success!

The Game at this time has an ever growing feud with 50 Cent. Their Fans were fooled into believing that the the Game had a good relationship with 50 Cent and his group G-Unit at the time of the Games album The Documentary’s release. Right after it coming out, 50 Cent felt that the The Game was disloyal for saying he wanted to work with artists with whom G-Unit were beefing with at the time such as Nas and Jadakiss, and he publicly disowned the Game. 50 also claimed that he was not getting his props for him featuring on the album.

During that ongoing beef, a member of The Game’s crew was shot at and injured after an incident at the popular Hot 97 radio station. While the beef between them grew, 50 and The Game held a press conference to make known their beef had ended. The Game during a event at the Summer Jam started G-Unot. Most fanatics felt that the feud, and the station incident was a stunt intended to raise their album sales. However, even after the circumstances had in fact ended, G-Unit continued to beef with The Game, insulting his street cred.

The Game will be ultimately putting out a strait to DVD named “Stop Snitchin Stop Lyin” that follows the feud with 50 and the G Unit squad. It will be released in Jan 06.

You’re a beginner, and you want basic guitar lessons to start you off. But you’re confused by all the choices: which would be the best guitar learning technique?

Guitar lessons are like anything else: there are two ways of learning, and they’re not the hard way or the easy way, nor are they my way or the highway. No, they’re teach yourself, or get a teacher.

Let’s look at teachers first. They come in four guises, and some are more effective than others. The more effective, the more expensive–usually.

The cheapest and probably least effective guitar lessons you can get are from a friend. I don’t say that to be disrespectful to anyone’s playing abilities, but simply to point out that unless that friend plays by the book and is a qualified teacher, you’ll probably pick up any bad habits they have. They’re also not likely to be available to give guitar lessons on a regular basis, and may either become impatient when you don’t pick things up fast enough, or may just let things slide, allowing you to form bad habits of your own. So your basic guitar lessons will remain just that–basic. The cost is good, though–usually nothing.

You may be fortunate enough to be still at school with guitar lessons available there. If so, take them. You’ll get a qualified teacher, weekly classes, and fellow pupils to swap notes with (and maybe even get together to play with!) after your guitar lessons.

Night school is the next most effective and cheap source. It differs from school because you have to make the effort to go after a day’s work. That usually means you’ve other things going on in your life–things that may intrude. Not only that, class size will probably be large, so you’ll have less input about what you want to learn. And there’s usually only two levels–basic guitar lessons, then improvers. The cost as an hourly rate will be very reasonable, though.

A professional teacher is the most expensive option. A good one will bring out the best in you, may encourage you to take grades, but will get frustrated if you don’t practice. If you have money, time, and are prepared to put the work in, this is one of the most effective routes to take, because they’ll correct any bad habits, and your guitar lessons are one-to-one. Obviously, you can save a little if you get your basic guitar lessons at, say, night school first.

If you can’t afford a professional teacher, and you don’t have evening/school classes or a friend handy, the second guitar learning technique is to teach yourself. You’ve three possible options.

You can buy guitar tutors fairly cheaply at most guitar shops, or online. They used to come in book form, but increasingly incorporate CDs and DVDs. There’s a one-off cost, non-refundable, and you progress at your own pace.

Once you’ve got past the basic guitar lessons in these tutors, you might decide the best way to teach yourself is to play your favourite songs by ear. So you listen to them over and over, work out the chords, then play. The advantage of this technique is that it’ll give you confidence, and if you mess up, no one will know. It’s also cheap–presumably you’ve already paid for the music.

Also, there are fan sites online where you can download lyrics and sheet music to your favourite songs, thus saving you the time of doing it yourself.

Finally, there’s the online course. For the cost of a few guitar lessons with a professional teacher you can get a course aimed at your level of proficiency. There are anything from basic guitar lessons online to advanced jazz. The courses usually come with a money-back guarantee, too, which is not true of the other methods. Another advantage is that you learn whenever it’s convenient–teachers are available only at certain times of the day.

So there you have it–the seven basic guitar lessons sources: a friend, school lessons, night school, a professional teacher, a book or course, learning by ear, or an online course.

Which is best?

Depends on how serious you are, how much time you can devote to practice, and what you want to achieve.

If you’re just starting, it might be best to go for the cheapest, most basic guitar lessons you can. That way, if you don’t persevere, you haven’t lost much.

If you do persevere, and you want to get really good, you’ll eventually want to consider a professional teacher.

Wherever you want your journey to take you, I hope you get there and have fun travelling!

In my previous article I suggested ways to develop a command
over the guitar fretboard. Usually when you are playing your
first guitar sheet music melodies you will have to learn the
notes in the first position on the guitar. To have a good grasp
of these notes on the guitar I suggest that you learn them
slowly and with concentration. I usually begin by teaching the
notes on the first string like E on open string, F on fret 1 and
G on fret 3. On string two you’ll find B on open string, C on
fret 1 and D on fret 3. With these notes you can play the song
Mary Had A Little Lamb.

Using the previous notes the melody can be played as follows:

E D C D E E E - D D D - E G G - E D C D E E E - E D D E D C

I hope you recognized the melody. This kind of music notation
doesn’t give any hints as to how the rhythm is to be played but
presupposes that you already know the melody. Traditional
classical guitar sheet music notation shows both the notes and
the way they are supposed to be played.

My dad was the only guitar tutor in the town where I lived and
he taught mostly classical guitar playing. His young students, I
was one of them, learned those first guitar pieces very fast
because he used a system similar to tablature showing the frets
and strings to play, along with the sheet music. Tablature
wasn’t common back then when playing classical guitar sheet
music. I remember somebody remarking that his system prevented
the children from learning to sight read sheet music. His reply
was that if somebody really wants to learn the notes they will
anyway. I agree with that and I have found that if a pupil is
not motivated learning guitar sheet music they will not advance
in this area whether they play with or without tablature.

What has fingers to do with guitar playing? The answer is
obvious. Quite a lot. A more important question is if the
fingers you choose to use can have a bearing upon your guitar
playing. Left hand fingerings are numbers on the sheet music
indication which finger you are suggested to use when playing a
specific note. Usually when playing the first pieces on the
guitar on the first frets it can be a good idea for you to play
the notes on the first fret with the index finger, notes on the
second fret with the middle finger, notes on the third fret with
the ring finger and notes on the fourth fret with your little
finger.

What then are the left hand fingering advantages? Can’t you play
every melody with your left index finger and forget about all
this fingering stuff? Well, of course you can play melodies with
your index finger but your progress will be very limited beyond
just playing easy melodies. You’ll have to move your left hand
all the time as you change frets and, most importantly, when
reading sheet music, you’ll have to look at the guitar fretboard
all the time instead of looking at the sheet music which means
that it will be hard to sight read music.

To summarize this guitar article, I could say that the important
thing when learning to play the notes on the guitar is to make a
conscious effort to learn the notes and not to work on to many
notes at the same time.

From the Telecaster to the Flying V to the Iceman to the Warlock, some guitar designs are forever branded on our consciousness, and now there’s a new one: the Minarik Inferno X-treme. The body shape erupts in furious fingers of flame. If ever there was a guitar design destined to ignite the imagination of young players, especially boys and girls who want to rawk, this is it.

Not that the Inferno X-treme lacks subtlety. With scientifically placed tone chambers, this instrument can sing sweetly if that’s what you desire. Or, it can live up to its appearance and enable you to carve sonic craters in the parking lot.

Although this guitar has a look that will inspire thousands of preteen statements along the lines of “Mom, that’s the one I want,” I suspect that tons of established players will find it useful in the studio or on the road because of its delicate balance, sleek feel, and stunning versatility. (And besides, the cunningly crafted guitar is also available in a more traditional body shape.)

“So, what’s the story on Minarik Guitars?” I can hear you ask. As the designer of the B.C. Rich Goddess Warlock and several other noteworthy models, Marc Minarik already has a legacy in the business. Now heading up his own company, Minarik has the goal of fusing quality workmanship with visually exciting design concepts.

Actually, his plan is much more complex than “make it attractive and build it right.” Marc Minarik is as eager to talk about the playability of his guitars as about their construction and appearance. And if you inquire about the light weight and the chambered body, he is just as pleased to demonstrate the superior nature of his firm’s products.

The flame-shaped body isn’t just flashy; the size and curve of the flames have been carefully calculated to positively affect the tone and balance of the instrument. The flame design is eye-candy, but it’s the application of the physics of sound that makes the Minarik Inferno X-treme really hot.

With a wonderful combination of form and function, the Minarik guitar line may have some interesting side effects, like bringing vitality to retail sales, launching a new generation of guitar players, and saving music from passive pop.

Not bad for a guy with a dream about a flaming guitar.

The idea of actually creating a complete piece of music to play frightens many students. They just don’t understand how someone could come up with something, put it down on paper, and call it their own.

The good news is that you don’t need to read music to compose. All you need is to understand a little about chords and musical phrases.

For example, in the lesson “Reflections in Water,” we have 4 chords to create with. We have the order in which the chords are to be played - and then we play, creating an entire piece of music.

Now this piece is actually an improvisation. But if I wanted to “compose” this same piece, I would just draw bar lines, notate where the chords should be played, i.e. every 2-bars, every 4-bars, etc., and either pencil in the first 2-bars of melody, or record it so I could remember the melodic idea.

This is how I compose! I’ve been doing it for a very long time and it’s a great method to quickly capture musical ideas. If I were to write out the same piece note for note, it would take hours! There’s no need to do this because once you have your chord changes down and know the arrangement of the piece (Reflections in Water is a broken-chord arrangement) that’s that!

“True Love” was written by Cole Porter and performed by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the 1955 film, “High Society,” which also starred Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. “True Love” was the first and only gold record for Grace Kelly and was the 21st gold record for Bing Crosby. The song stayed on the charts for 22 weeks, rising as high as number 3. “True Love” was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Song in 1956, although it lost to Doris Day’s “Que Sera, Sera.”

Cole Porter was a highly experienced songwriter when he wrote “True Love.” The decades of the 1930’s and 1940’s were full of Cole Porter hit musicals. During the 1930’s alone, Porter wrote music and lyrics for ten Broadway musicals for New York and two film musicals for Hollywood.

Cole Porter was born in Indiana in 1891 to parents who were wealthy. He received an extensive musical education, learning the piano and the violin by age six. His favorite of the two was the piano which he practiced two hours daily. By age ten he was writing words and music to original songs, and by age seventeen he published his first song.

Porter also received an impressive academic education which carried him through Yale and into Harvard Law School and the Harvard School of Music. While at Yale, Porter became the president of the Glee Club and a cheer leader, and, among the 300 songs he wrote while at Yale, he wrote two football fight songs that are still played today. Despite being the roommate of Dean Acheson, the future Secretary of State under President Truman, Porter dropped out of Harvard Law School to continue with his music education.

After World War I, Porter moved to Europe where he met and married Linda Lee Thomas, a beautiful and rich divorcee and a descendant of the Lees of Virginia. Their relationship was a loving, supportive, lifelong partnership. Cole Porter was gay and had numerous male interests which Linda had agreed to allow. However, the marriage was at times unstable when Porter’s gay interests threatened the couple’s carefully maintained social appearances.

Following their marriage in 1919 in Paris, the Porters lived an extravagant lifestyle in Europe through the 1920’s. Their palatial home in Paris had floor to ceiling mirrors and zebra skin upholstery. Later, they moved into a famous palace in Venice where their lush parties included fifty gondoliers, circus acrobats, and a ballet company. They also built a night club outside their palace which accommodated 100 guests.

Back in New York, Porter’s first few contributions to Broadway musicals were poorly received. However, by the end of the 1920’s Porter gained recognition, and through the 1930’s and 1940’s he was one of the brightest stars on Broadway. He worked excessively and tirelessly on his musical productions and spent time in both New York and Hollywood.

In 1937 a terrible horse riding accident crushed both of Porter’s legs. As the story goes, while waiting for hours for help to arrive he composed the lyrics to a verse of his song, “At Long Last Love.” The accident left him crippled and in pain for the rest of his life. He underwent more than 30 leg operations until his right leg was finally amputated in 1958. Following his leg amputation, Cole Porter dropped out of music production until his death in 1964.

In 1955 Cole Porter wrote the lyrics and music for “High Society,” starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong. The film was a musical remake of the classic 1940 award winning movie, “The Philadelphia Story,” which won a Best Actor Oscar for James Stewart and which also starred Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. “High Society” featured nine musical numbers, plus there were five additional songs written by Porter which were not included in the movie.

“High Society” was one of MGM’s greatest musicals. Grace Kelly was the movie’s luminous star, and the romantic exchange with Bing Crosby in “True Love” was one of the movie’s highlights.

Here are the lyrics to Cole Porter’s “True Love.”

Sometimes wind blows

a new moon moves at last alone

feeling far above her

oh how lucky we are

while I give to you

would you give to me

true love true love

so on and on it will always be

true love true love

for you and I have a guardian angel

on high with nothing to do

but to give to you as you give to me

love forever true

love forever true

for you and I have a guardian angel

on high with nothing to do

but to give you as you give to me

love forever true

love forever true

give me more true love oh yeah

true love true love

true love true love

got to give me your oh yeah oh yeah

true love true love

true love true love

for you and I have a guardian angel

on high with nothing to do

but to give to you as you give to me

love forever true

love forever true

love forever true love.

Who doesn’t need more friends?
Making friends just got easier. The guitar is an incredible way to enjoy being with your friends because you’ve got something cool that everyone can do. This page will help you see why guitars are the magnet to attracting more friends. If you already know that you want a guitar, check out our guide to buying a new guitar page. Or maybe you already have a guitar and need to improve your skills, in that case start our guitar lesson 1.

The need for guitar players
Almost every band that is formed has at least one or more guitarists in it. Guitars have increased in popularity and need over the past few decades. Punk bands are now the largest type of bands around and they have guitars galore that range from bass guitar to lead guitar. Face it, guitars are cool.

Its no secret, the guitar is the friend making machine
The guitar is the perfect instrument to increase your circle of friends. From rocking with old buddies, to serenading the ladies, to campfire outings, a guitarist can always catch everyone’s attention. Guitarists end up being the life of the party. It’s a known fact that some of the most romantic scenes show being with a loved one, on the beach, guitar in hand, and singing a way. Thanks to the mobility of the guitar this scene can occur so many other places, such as: in front of a fireplace, candlelight dinner, picnic at the park, and on and on.

Benefits of playing the guitar
There several reasons why guitars carry such a popular pull. First, they are easy to learn, yet still offer a challenge because guitars take a lifetime to master. Second, they are transportable and convenient. Third, they are one of the few instruments that sound great by themselves and with other instruments. Fourth, this instrument makes you look good, by not requiring your face to be distorted by blowing into anything. Fifth, it’s an instrument you can share. Whether teaming up with your buddies and their guitars or just allowing your friends to sing along it’s still going to be a group involved activity.

Now it’s Your Turn to Learn the Guitar
