Music Tips + More

Although the electric guitar has originated in blues music, it is rock that gave its popularity. With rock music, the electric guitar became a massively expressive instrument. All guitar lessons have to touch on rock as well, but if you want to learn to play rock guitar, there are special modules you can take up. These modules focus almost exclusively on rock music.

The things you will be taught when you learn to play rock guitar can be roughly spread into three modules: first lessons, where you will learn the basics about playing the guitar, electric guitar improver and power chords.

First Lessons

These lessons are mostly for beginners. If you have some knowledge about playing the guitar, you may skip some of these. This is up to your teacher to decide.

However, if you’re holding a guitar for the first time, this is where your teacher will usually start. You will be taught the fundamentals about playing a guitar in general and playing rock guitar in particular. You will learn the basics about rock lead guitar and power chords. After these first lessons, you will have some idea on how to play classic rock guitar. If you get these right, you are on your way to actually playing rock guitar.

Electric Guitar Improver

In the next lessons, you will probably be taught various rock techniques, such as sliding, string-bending, pull-offs, vibrato and hammer-ons. These tips will enable you to play some fairly good rock solos. You will also learn about scales and chords that will help you start making up your own music.
There might be a lot of blues references within these lessons. Going through all these will help you understand the relation between blues and rocks, which is essential if you want to learn to play rock guitar like a pro.

Power Chords

Power chords are two or three string distorted sounding chords used in some of the most popular rock songs of all times. You will learn to play several rock songs during the first few lessons of this module. Afterwards you will be very familiar with the fretboard and surprise yourself with the sounds you will be able to play.

If you seriously want to learn to play rock guitar, don’t get frustrated or discouraged if you’re not playing the way you would like to at the beginning. If you enjoy playing, the progress will come at some point. Find a guitar teacher you communicate well with, design a workable schedule to practice and, most importantly, try to have fun while you’re learning.

Ever since some cognitive human beings have set foot on Earth, music has greatly taken part of their lives. The folks belonging to the days of yore created their own musical arrangements by plucking strings and hitting things like wood, hide, or stone. The sounds of nature have also served as one pleasant musical sound for them. They undoubtedly took pleasure listening to the sound of the waterfalls, the animals, and even the weather-related reverberations.

Music has then taken a further course. Throughout the passing of time, people have invented creative means of creating music. From the schools to the churches, there is music. The music industry has also created varied genres of music for all occasions.

You will often see or hear people preaching about the word of God. The gospel of the Lord is being delivered through the means of other people who serve as His own instruments. Simply listening to His words enlightens your spirit, right? God has often reminded His people to love one another as he loves everyone. He places every creation he has made under His care. Although every person has been created in His image and likeness, still no one leads a perfect life. To put it in a much simpler term, no one is as perfect as God is.

One’s spirituality and faith can thus be manifested by several means. Reading the bible, following the ten commandments of God, praying, singing gospel music, and attending mass are among the typical ways by which one’s spirituality is nourished. They often say that those who sing praise twice. Thus, by singing the gospel music, you are praising twice!

What is gospel music?

Gospel music is a religious music that contains the word of God. Gospel music is at all times used as one medium to praise God Almighty. In varying tunes and arrangements, gospel music can always be heard during the celebration of the mass, praise and worship activities, and healing mass.

There is no limit as to the use of gospel music. You can even make it as your morning praise habit. You can listen to it while driving your car. Or you can let it resound in your house. Some gospel music singers perform the genre in nightclubs and secular settings. These days, more and more gospel music are hence becoming danceable therefore making the enlightening of the spirit more effective.

The Roots of Gospel Music

The gospel music was first popularized by the African-American churches way back in the 1930s. Two styles of the gospel music emerged in those days—that of the black people and that of the white southerners. Despite the two separate styles, gospel music still traces its roots from the Methodist hymnal. There came a time when the artists from the two separate categories sang the gospel music of each other.

The onset of gospel music has marked a phenomenon in America regardless of the distinction between the while and black churches. Indeed, gospel music has reached Australia that gave birth to the gospel choirs of Jonah and The Whalers and The Elementals plus the beginning of the Australian Gospel Music Festival. Norway also gave rise to both the Oslo Gospel Choir and the Ansgar Gospel Choir.

The Influences of Gospel

The trendy pop music had greatly influenced the gospel artists. In turn, gospel music has also influenced the rhythm and blues singers of the 1940s up to the 1950s.

Gospel music has reached the peek of its popularity. Until now, several other gospel musical artists are gaining their own fame for the genre and a lot other patrons are getting drawn on them.

I love teaching piano and watching the lights of musical discovery twinkle in my students’ eyes year after year, as they discover new piano skills and abilities they’ve dreamed of being able to play. When children discover they can play music on the piano they’ve previously only imagined playing, they are so delighted with themselves. Can you remember the experience of watching and listening to a pianist or a piano teacher play for you? Did it seem so effortless and fun for them that you wondered what it would be like to be able to do that yourself? Children feel the same way! Want to see the twinkle of musical accomplishment in your child’s eyes? You can by giving them the gift of music this Christmas.

Here are some things kids in piano lessons say when they get this twinkle of musical accomplishment in their eyes.

1. “I’m a note reader!”

2. “I’m incredible!”

3. “I can’t believe I did that!”

4. “Wow! I’m getting really good at this!”

5. “It was hard before, but now it’s really easy!”

6. “I’ve always wanted to play this song! Now I can!”

7. “I’ve heard that song before. I want to play that one!”

8. “My Grandma and I can play duets now!”

9. “I’m a piano player!”

10. “My friend plays the piano too. We like to play our songs for each other!”

Don’t wait to give your child the gift of music. It will keep surprising both you and your child all year long. And the night before Christmas Mama and Papa can put a feather in their stocking cap, when they settle down for that long winter’s nap!

Invisible Career-Path Available Only to Musicians

For a skilled musician, there is an additional career path that is invisible to the non-musician. This is an additional benefit beyond the pleasure of playing music, the attention it brings, and the better academic performance than students who do not learn to play a musical instrument. It is a broad range of extra career opportunities that non-musicians never even consider.

But if you’re a musician, you can apply. Let’s take a look at these careers that are available only to musicians

Education: Are you a musician who has also studied education? If so, there are numerous music education opportunities that may interest you:

§ Music educator at a college, conservatory, university

§ Music teacher at secondary or elementary school

§ Private music instructor

§ Music supervisor

§ Choir director

Therapy: Are you a musician who has also studied psychiatry? You can practice the trade of music therapy in a wide array of settings. Some of the sources of employment for music therapists are the following:

§ Schools

§ Universities

§ Nursing Homes

§ Mental health clinics

§ Correctional Facilities

§ Private practice

Business: Ever wonder what it takes to work in business management? Besides business smarts, an ability to talk the language of music will take you places the non-musican cannot go:

§ Artist Manager or Agent

§ Talent Agent

§ Concert Promoter

§ Independent Radio Promoter

§ Music Business Entrepreneur

§ Music Business Consultant

§ Record Company Executive

§ Music Publisher

§ Tour Coordinator

Performance: Actors are more highly valued if they have a musical education. Today, with so few actors multi-skilled as they were in the era of the large studios, this can be a real advantage. Below are some of the jobs for which an actor who is also a musician may “incidentally” be qualified.

§ Performing artist

§ Soloist, instrumental or vocal

§ Studio musician

§ Background vocalist

§ Theatre musician

§ Accompanist

§ Church musician

§ Product demonstrator for instrument manufacturer

Movies / Video Games: If you study movies or video game production, a background as a musician will help you prepare for music-related jobs such as the following:

§ Conductor

§ Music Composer

§ Music Editor

§ Music Supervisor (to scout for music)

§ Arranger (to determine the mix of song elements per the conductor or producer’s specifications)

§ Sound designer (of effects to accompany music score)

§ Jingle writer / composer

From education to video games, there are careers available for those who happen to have a background in music which the rest of us never see. Each of these fields requires time and study for proficiency, but they represent a career path that is nonexistent for non-musicians.

Sure, you already knew that playing music could improve your quality of life. Now you know it can improve the quality of your career.

If you want to transfer your 45’s, EP’s, and LP’s to CD, reasonable results with cheap and even free software can be achieved. Not quite the standards of the professionals, but reasonable never the less. So here’s a guide on how you can proceed.

If your turntable is connected to a Hi-Fi amplifier with a dedicated phono turntable) input, then connect a stereo phono lead (sometimes referred to as RCA leads) from the ‘line out’ or ‘record out’ from your amplifier to the ‘line in’ on your computer. The socket on your computer should be labelled ‘Line In,’ very often colour coded Blue and may have a symbol by it which looks like four or five curves in a line and an arrow running through the middle pointing away from the smallest curve.

If however you have a turntable, but no amplifier or don’t have access to one (ie. beg, borrow, steal - well maybe not steal!) or your amplifier has no dedicated phono/turntable input, then you will need a ‘phono pre-amp’. This piece of kit amplifies the very small signal coming from the turntable to match the input of your soundcard (ie. the ‘line in’ on your computer) and also changes the frequency response of the signal so the sound is acceptable to listen to.

If you are going to use a pre-amp, then connect the phono (RCA) lead from your turntable to the input of the pre-amp and the output of the pre-amp to the ‘Line In’ on your computer soundcard, so you will need another stereo ‘phono to phono’ (RCA to RCA) lead to run from the pre-amp to your computer.

This pre-amp will work fine for LP’s EP’s and 45’s, but technically the match should be different for 78 rpm records, and even different ‘matches’ for different types/labels of 78’s - however unless you are wanting a professional result then a standard phono pre-amp should be fine. If you are going to use an audio editor, or dedicated software then you can use their built in graphic equalizer to ‘tweak’ the sound anyway.

Now you are connected, you need some software to record your audio. The first thing to do is decide what end result you would like. Here are some options:

If you just want a simple way to transfer your LP to CD with no restoration, splitting the audio into tracks isn’t a priority, and you have some software to burn the file to CD then try Audiotouch Lite. It has the simplest interface ever. Once a couple of settings are made it’s a ‘one button’ operation. You can also use this software to record any audio running through your PC, like Internet Radio or a microphone. Another piece of software is ‘Audacity’ which is a very good audio editor and is free. It’s rather more complicated to use though, so expect a bit of a learning curve to begin with.

The other option is a dedicated Software Package that will Record your LP, Restore, split your recording into tracks, and Burn to CD. You may even find you can save your audio in MP3 format so you can transfer your audio to a portable player. This is definitely the way to go especially if you have quite a few LP’s to transfer, and of course these packages include an option to clean up the audio to remove crackles, pops, and other unwanted noises. It is surprising how long it can take to transfer your LP’s so a small investment in dedicated software to begin with makes the process so much easier and quicker.

There are quite a few software packages to choose from. I’ve never come across free software in this category and some are quite good but some are awful! So beware. I’ve tried quite a number so here are a few which make a good job and don’t cost very much.

Steinberg Clean is very good, if you can get hold of a copy, but I think it has been dropped. Some suppliers were still advertising it at the time of writing this, plus of course there is always ebay.

Acondigital.com’s Acoustica 3.3 is very good as is Acoustica’s Software ‘Spin it again’ (Don’t be confused by the two ‘Acoustica’s – they are different companies). If you would like more information on these packages then visit our website where you can see the results of my tests on both packages.

Setting up the software is straight forward and ‘wizards’ take you through this process, so it doesn’t take long at all, plus it’s well explained in the ‘help’ files. All these software packages will burn your transferred audio file to CD in a format that will play both on your computer and a normal home CD player. The process is all included in the wizards and is very easy to do.

I hope this has given you an understanding on how you can transfer your LP’s to CD and you enjoy the end results.

Tupac Shakur was a very influential person in 20th century USA. He was born on
June 16, 1971 in Brooklyn New York, and died on September 13, 1996 in Las Vegas
Nevada (unknown author, no title, no page, letter code C). But his family moved
around a lot while he was a kid (Bastin, J.D.). He eventually ended up in the
Bay Area California alone and spent his first two years there homeless (unknown
author, no title, n.p., letter code D). He grew up with only his mom and loved
her very much. He even wrote a song called Dear Mama to his mom and thanked her
for how she tried her best at raising him.

His public career started when he joined the seminal Bay Area rap ensemble
(u.a., “original area,” n.p.). He started as a tour dancer but then started
rapping live (u.a., “original area,” n.p.). From there he released a couple
albums and then was offered to be in some movies. He became friends with a
couple of popular rap artists like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre (Placid n.p.).
He made some songs and music videos with them that made it big on the Billboard
charts. This really helped his popularity. He released a double CD with the
songs on it and a lot of his own songs and sold millions of copies (u.a., n.t.,
n.p. letter code D) More people were influenced to buy his CD. People listened
to the music and did what he said he did. So Tupac was influencing all of these
people.

Tupac was rich and famous now. He was showing off his own style now and didn’t
need his popular friends. This is the time that many people saw the real Tupac
and loved him. He was now very influential to fans. They wanted to be just like
him. He starred in more movies and could be who he really was. He did a lot of
interviews that showed his beliefs. He said self esteem and self respect was
very important and said “I feel as though I am a shining prince just like
Malcolm and feel that all of us are shining princes, and if we live like shining
princes, then whatever we want can be ours. Anything.” (Patrick, Tony, n.p.) And
when he says all of us, he means all men. He also said he doesn’t care if
someone is white or black. And no one can be judged by their skin. “So just
because it’s Black don’t mean it’s cool, and just because it’s White don’t mean
it’s evil.”(Patrick, Tony n.p.) If he judged a man, he judged them by what they
do to or how they treat others. Tupac wasn’t racis!
t against any body. And he showed that. I’ve seen him treat everyone equal that
I see him with on TV or even on movies. This is an influence because since
people want to be like him, they will follow his beliefs. And if Tupac believes
in non-racism, then the people will believe in that too.

This is a big difference from him and other rap artists. A lot of others are
racist to different people, and the different people then don’t like him, don’t
listen to his music, don’t see his movies, and aren’t influenced by him. Almost
all races listen to Tupac’s music. I’ve known Mexican, White, Black, Asian,
Indian, and even Pakistani people who listened to his music and are influenced
and are moved by him. I’ve even saw a show in Singapore about music here and a
Singaporean kid said he listens to Tupac.

Tupac has a lot of self-values that he follows. He even said it’s hard
sometimes, but he keeps it up. He said “To me it’s really troubling because I
look over what’s successful - Marky Mark, Hammer, Vanilla Ice, New Kids on the
Block selling twenty-two million copies, and I want that so badly, but I can’t
do that. I would be wrong to do that, knowing what I know and having the brain
that I have, for me to even go and write some simple shit would be wrong even
though I would get paid and I would get more people’s money.” (Patrick, Tony,
n.p.) This means that Tupac has a strong will and values. He resisted the
temptation to write some easy rhyming words and get peoples money. He instead
followed his values and worked up to his potential.

He says he also believes in Karma (Bastin, J.D., n.p.). That what comes around
goes around. And he said he believes in reincarnation too. He wants to be a good
man in this life, because he said he knew he was going to die soon (Bastin,
J.D., n.p.) and wanted to be ready for the next life. The reason Tupac gives for
the reason he makes his music is not only for the money, but so people would
know what it was like for him growing up. He also wanted to be remembered. He
said “I would rather leave something so that when people pick up 2Pacalypse Now
or any of my other albums in 1999, they’ll go, ‘Damn! Brothers had it hard back
in the day, but brothers were working it out.” (Patrick, Tony, n.p.)

He said his music is spiritual: a little like gospels, but with a different idea
in mind. And that his music was not meant to be danced to, but just to be
listened to. His music was for the strong willed (Patrick, Tony, n.p.). He shows
his hard life through his music “Which celebrates violent defiance of a society
viewed as largely racist and lethal” (Patrick, Tony, n.p.).

I think Tupac influenced most of the people that listen to his music. People
start to dress like him and talk like him if they see him on music videos
singing his newest song. They could also listen to the things that Tupac says he
does, and then do those things themselves. I hope his values and beliefs in a
non-racial world also influence people. He does say some bad things, but he did
spend eleven and a half months in a maximum-security jail for something he
claims he never did and says that he was framed for (Placid, Sylvester n.p.). He
also spent two years of his life homeless (u.a., n.t., n.p. letter code D) and
grew up having it hard to fit in(u.a., n.t, n.p., letter code B). Tupac was not
a normal man, but he was still trying to send a good message to the youth’s that
listened and still do listen to his music.

He also influenced many future and present rap artists. Biggie Smallz for
example sounded just like Tupac, and used the same voice tones as Tupac. I’ve
also heard about five other songs that steal the backgrounds to Tupac’s songs.
And if there are that many imitators now, there will definitely be a lot in the
future.

One of the reasons he was so influential is because he showed his real self to
the world through interviews, music videos, movies, his music, and his poetry.
He showed his views on the world unlike most other rap artists. Another reason
is because people liked his views and liked his non-racial ways. People liked
the way he sung about real subjects. Not like the others who sing about nothing
much, and then get all the money they can. Also his unique style of mixing new
sounds for a new beat really separated his music from others. He didn’t use
traditional beats that people get tired of. He added a twist to rap and hip-hop
music all together. And brought a lot of people to like that.

“Tupac was one of raps most controversial and influential performers” (“tupac”
n.p.). “Tupac Amaur Shakur left a distinct impact on American culture that is
still being shown today” (u.a., n.t., n.p. letter code D) He was one of the most
influential persons in the 20th century America. And I believe he will be
remembered and loved by a lot for years to come. He has served and will serve as
a role model for younger kids growing up today.

Learning to play good rhythm guitar was the hardest thing for me to figure out when I was first learning. Most people associate playing rhythm to just strumming chords, but it is so much more. I love playing guitar solos and when I sit down to play by myself I usually end up playing an amazing 20 minute solo for myself. Man it’s a lot of fun, but in reality 95% of your playing will be rhythm.

I read an interview of Eddie Van Halen once in which Eddie stated that he was primarily a rhythm guitar player first and a soloist second. Most of the songs you hear and the “riffs” you groove to are not solos but guitar rhythms. The guitar solo is missing in most modern rock music (too bad). I thought this was an indication that modern guitarists just did not have the talent. Listen to bands like Tool and you quickly learn that these guitarists are just as talented as their fathers. They focus more on supporting the song and providing the “vibe”. Each generation of musicians needs to do there own thing, but guitar solos are starting to make a come back.

Learning to play rhythm properly is IMPOSSIBLE if all you do is sit in your room a jam by yourself. Most guitarists have a hard time leaping from playing alone in their room to playing in a band. There are things you can do to make the transition easier. The most important advice is to buy a drum machine or at least find some sort of rhythm device to play along with. Use the drum machine every time you play. Tuning my guitar and turning on my drum machine is automatic for me.

Another effective way to learn rhythm is by playing along with your favorite songs. Tascam sells a machine called a guitar trainer that slows down a CD so you can learn a song at a manageable speed and then allows you to increase the speed as you learn the song. If you cannot afford one of these devices then play along to a CD or Ipod. I often load a song on my Ipod and then put my amp head phones over the Ipod head phones. Be careful of the volume.

Learning good rhythm guitar will land you gigs and teach you more about how to play music. So when you sit down to practice focus about 75% of your time on perfecting this demanding skill.

OK, I passed a small milestone and didn’t even realize it until
tonight. About 1 year ago, a started a website called indieTunes.com
which i envisioned as being the best place on the internet for
independent artists to sell and stream their downloadable music
on a secure platform, and the best part of it all is, that my
business model (as crazy as it may be) pays the artist 100% of
the profits from every song sold. Let’s see ya beat that!!! The
only thing that gets deducted from the sale are visa/MasterCard/
and pay pal fees (which dont go to indietunes anyway) and the
rest gets paid to the artist. The only thing indieTunes.com
charges is a $9.99 a month membership fee for a Premium
membership which allows you to sell your downloadable music and
stream your music videos. Basic memberships are FREE, and you
can stream your music and alot of other stuff with a Basic. So
if you can sell one album a month, you can virtually break even,
and everything after that is pure profit. Not bad huh?

OK, for anyone who thinks I’m getting rich off the backs of indie
artists
, think again. Building this site has
practically put me in the poor house and I am no where near
break-even point on monthly expenses let alone my full
investment. However, I have confidence that someday this will be
one of the cornerstone sites for independent artists on the
internet, and I will continue to build and upgrade and promote
the site to ensure its success. So far in the first year, with
very little promotion, we’ve gotten 1,059 artists on the site to
date. I’m ramping up to do national PR (anybody know an insanely
talented web PR person?) and I’ll be much happier when the site
has 10,000 artists, which I’d like to say is my goal for this
time next year.

So hey, spread the word. indieTunes.com is
a great site, and we’re finishing up a very substantial upgrade
right now that will add to each artists page (yes every artist
gets their own page), the upgrade will add a photo gallery,
artist blog, and a reviews section to every page. So, do me a
favor, go spend some time surfing indietunes, get a feel for it,
give me some feedback, positive or negative (I’m a big boy I can
take it), and spread the word. Me and the indieTunes staff are
working very hard every day to make this a successful site!!

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or the Chronic Fatigue Dysfunction Syndrome is characterized by some symptoms that are often confused to be because of high blood pressure or influenza. The person often feels fatigued for long periods of time, with muscle cramps, nausea and other symptoms that are not cured by long rests. Even the fatigue suffered by individuals suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is debilitating and prolonged leading to gradual decrease in the person’s ability to perform even daily activities due to tiredness.

Although not completely confirmed, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is known to have been caused due to an individual’s faulty or affected immune system that might be a result of many causes such as prolonged illness from a severe disease, old age, environment, mental breakdown due to excess stress, nervous systems inflammation, or even as simple as due to viral or bacterial infection. Whatever be the cause, the patient tends to feel severe fatigue resulting in further infection of the already infected parts and more if not treated on time.

Since Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has specific symptoms, it is easier to detect the illness in someone if aware that such an illness exists. As mentioned, no direct action results in this disease. A variety of causes, alone or together might lead to this, sometimes gradually increasing in an individual. Sometimes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome might occur in a body following some other wound or infection or be caused due to even some minor surgery.

One piece of bad news about being affected by Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is that there is no permanent cure to this disease. Treatments might make the feeling of tiredness lessen to a great extent and the patient would be able to continue with the ordinary daily tasks. However, long term treatment is yet been discovered for complete cure for this dreadful disease that saps one of their strength leaving them as weak as new born babies.

Catching onto the disease at an early stage can be advantageous as the patient would still have some strength and would be able to respond in a better manner to the medication. Since, as mentioned, there is no complete cure to this disease, medication might have to be taken on a long term basis or keep the medicine on hand to keep the disease at bay at all times.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome provides detailed information on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Treatments, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Fibromyalgia and more. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is affiliated with Causes Of Fatigue.

Recording is a time-intensive experience, and problems that
arise often seem magnified. No one wants to wait for an hour
while the guitar player runs to Guitar Center for new strings.
So, to keep things going smoothly and efficiently, here are some
things to do in preparation:

1. Practice! You’d be surprised how many bands come into the
studio obviously unprepared. If you can’t play through the song
without making mistakes, then you’re not ready to record yet.
Take the time to practice the songs you want to track
thoroughly. This isn’t to say that you can’t be creative in the
studio, but it’s a lot cheaper to be creative on your own time.

2. Make sure your songs are finished. Going into the studio
hoping to finish lyrics or parts on the spot is a recipe for
dissatisfaction. You may be inspired by the pressure, but you’ll
inevitably listen back to it later on and think that you could
have sang it better, or that you don’t especially like this line
or that phrase.

3. Record yourselves. It’s very useful to record your practice
using a simple tape recorder. The finished product won’t sound
very good, but you’ll be able to hear if you’re off time, or off
key. It may also make you aware that some parts of your song are
dragging, or that other parts could be extended or more
developed.

4. Get your gear in shape. Don’t show up for a session that
you’re paying for with gear that doesn’t work, cables that cut
out, batteries that are going dead, or blown speakers. If you’re
afraid that your gear is less than perfect, make some calls. You
engineer can point you to some people in town that rent gear on
a day-by-day basis, or to other musicians who might be willing
to loan an amp or cabinet for a day or two. It makes a
difference!

5. Tune your instrument. Drummers should put on new heads about
1 week before the session. The snare head should be replaced
immediately before the session, and if you’re doing more than
one or two songs, consider bringing extra snare heads. Nothing
sounds as good on tape as a fresh snare head. Guitarists should
put a new set of strings on a few days before the session. Bring
extra strings, as you probably will break one or two. Bass
players can replace their strings, although new bass strings can
be a bit overly metallic. I recommend changing bass strings a
week or two before the session.

6. Let people know you’re busy! You don’t want to be called in
to work half-way through your session. Everyone involved needs
to clear their schedules. Nothing creates more tension in a
session than someone wanting to blow out early so they can hit
some party. Also, if you’re recording at your home, make sure
your family knows about it. Take phones off the hook, recording
will require some degree of quiet. If you’re working at your
practice space, make sure the neighbors know that you’ll need
some quiet, if there are other bands at your facility, ask them
for their schedules, and work out a time when they won’t be
playing in the next room.

7. Have a plan. It’s always better to have fewer songs to
finish, and to know precisely which songs you’re trying to get
done. Often, once a session gets rolling, it’s easy to just go
ahead and track some of the other songs you have. While this
isn’t terrible, in my experience these tracks are usually
discarded, as they haven’t been thoroughly practiced, and may
not even be complete.

9. Develop a vision. I like to come see a band before I record
them, just to get a feel for their sound, and develop my vision
for the session. If you envision your record sounding like the
latest MTV hit, you may be frustrated and disappointed. Your
band is unique, and my goal as an engineer is to find what’s
best about your band and accent that. Your record may not sound
like anything that’s come before, and trying to cram it into a
pre-existing notion of a “good recording” doesn’t do it justice.
The Pixies didn’t sound like anything that came before them, nor
does Modest Mouse, or the Beatles, for that matter.

8. Relax! Recording is fun, and there’s really no pressure. Just
be prepared, and you’ll have a smooth, enjoyable session with a
great product at the end!
