The FCC’s appeal comes after rising concerns of misuse of networks by US broadband providers involving regulation of traffic from competitors, or blocking of content that they disapprove of, thereby turning them into powerful internet censors. The FCC is trying to legislate against such potential censorship from both mobile and fixed broadband providers.

The Commission says that recent instances where broadband providers have thwarted the use of applications like VoIP services and peer-to-peer software and blocked political content have led them to believe that only legislation can ensure complete neutrality of services across the internet.

Genachowski said that the FCC must constantly be on alert to preserve a free and open internet culture. He added that the internet must continue to promote economic growth, innovation, democratic engagement and competition.

This move however will not go down well with the opponents of net neutrality, who think that a legislation limiting providers’ freedom to run their networks could hold them from investing in the development and expansion of the networks.
