“Only knowledge from above can Move us forward.”

On Christopher Columbus’ fourth voyage to the New World in 1503, he and his crew became stranded on the island of Jamaica. Columbus’ food supply was almost gone, and his ship was too badly damaged to repair [worms had eaten through the wooden hull].

At first, the Jamaicans gave Columbus and his crew food and supplies. When Columbus and his crew were not rescued after many months, the Jamaicans finally refused to give them any additional food.

Columbus did not want his crew to starve, so he came up with a plan. Columbus could tell from his navigational tables that there would be a total lunar eclipse on February 29, 1504. He decided to schedule a meeting with the Jamaicans for that night.

At the meeting, Columbus told the Jamaicans that God was not happy about how they were treating him and his crew, so God was going to take away the Moon as a sign of his unhappiness! After Columbus told this to them, the lunar eclipse began. This terrified the Jamaicans! They pleaded with Columbus to bring back the Moon, and they said he could have all the food he wanted.

Columbus told them that he would have to go talk to God. Instead, he snuck away to watch an hourglass that he had timed so he would know exactly when the eclipse would end. Right before the lunar eclipse ended, Columbus returned and told the Jamaicans that God would give back the Moon. And, of course, the Moon reappeared.

The Jamaicans gave food and supplies to Columbus and his crew until they were rescued and returned to Europe. I guess one could say that knowledge from above or about the “above” is a good thing to have.

I find it very interesting that the Bible declares from the beginning that God created the lights in the sky. The greater light refers, of course, to the sun. The lesser, on the other hand, refers to the moon. What I want to say is this: It wasn’t until man became knowledgeable of the cosmos that he began to make strides forward in religion, philosophy, science, literature, and discovery. So pardon the pun, but it’s true. Knowledge from above can move us forward. Let me explain, please.

Before Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) defied the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church by saying that the earth moves around the sun (the church believed that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun and stars revolved around it), he was risking his life.

But Copernicus was not afraid to speak out about his knowledge of the heavens, and the world of modern science owes him a debt of gratitude (Copernicus was a scientist and devout Christian). At the time, government and religious officials did not encourage original thought for fear that new ideas would create unrest. So, a free thinker like Copernicus had to come along with his knowledge of the stars in order to move us forward in our thinking.

Before Columbus could sail to a New World, there had to be a greater knowledge of the seas and navigation. When the ancient Phoenicians took to the seas, they hugged the coastline to keep from getting lost at sea. When the Vikings took to the seas a few centuries before Columbus, they were using primitive (caged ravens to determine proximity to shore), but albeit greater knowledge and technology than the Phoenicians.

There were two basic inventions during the Renaissance that made Columbus’ journey to the New World possiblethe magnetic compass and the astrolabe (forerunner to the modern sextant). Only by knowledge of the sun, moon, and stars, with a few simple instruments that measured distance between sun, moon, and stars did Columbus succeed in navigating the high seas. Here again, knowledge from above was necessary to move man forward.

Remember the importance of the stars to the wise men from the east when Jesus was born? Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 24 about His second return? What did He say would foretell His appearing? He told us the sun would turn dark and the stars would fall from the heavens. That’s interesting. Again, knowledge of the stars above will point to the soon coming King of Kings.

Now what am I saying? I’m saying that God put the stars in the sky for a purpose. Yes, they are beautiful, but there is more to them than just their beauty. The Bible declares that all His creation declares His glory. Even the stars in the sky speak of their Creator. Why can’t man do this? Why does man remain the only rebel in God’s creation who refuses to worship and adore his Creator? The Bible says that a man who says in his heart that there is no God is a fool.

There was good reason why the three wise men were called wise–they looked above them for guidance and it came to them in the form of a star. It just so happened that the star they discovered was the Christ child. The wisest discovery of all time.

Do you know what is so special for a child’s birthday celebration? It is the birthday cake. They love the moment of cutting the birthday cake. There can be so many gifts for the child, but the center of attraction is the birthday cake. Therefore, it is worth putting a lot of time and money in planning the birthday cake.

More than the taste, we need to concentrate in shape, color, and size of the birthday cake. It is always better if we could design the birthday cake in cartoon characters that are familiar to the children. If the birthday cake is made in the birthday child’s favorite color, they will obliviously love it.

The birthday cake idea

If the birthday cake has a theme or idea the attraction for it, is immense. Here are few suggestions. There are Pirates and Princesses, a classic birthday cake themes for boys and girls. They can be Cinderella Castle Cake, ice Cream Castle Cake, Pirate Cake, Pirate Ship Cake, Princess Cake, Splendid Castle Cake, and Treasure Chest Cake

When installing Linux and Windows XP on the same computer, the result can be a failure due to missing certain steps during the installation process.

The whole process is mostly done automatically. That doesn’t imply that you just watch the computer do all work for you from start to finish.

At certain stages of the process, you are prompted to choose some options the system presents. Most questions you can answer easily, but there are some options which needs careful consideration to pick.

The options above are critical and can make the installation a total failure.

How do I know?

I tried it many times, and I found out the big difference. There are only two outcome of installing Linux and Windows XP on the same computer: Success or failure. No other choices.

If you want to ensure successful installations, here are 4 simple basic steps that will help you tremendously, and will make a huge difference in making the installation run smooth and produce the desired result:

1-You MUST partition your hard disk in to 2 partitions using Windows XP.

This should be done, because in most cases each operating system should be on a separate partition.

There are some exceptions that two operating systems can work in the same partition, but it is not the proper method.

It is possible two have two Microsoft operating system on the same partition depending on their versions, but this will never work if one operating system is Linux.

So, if you need to install Linux and Windows XP on the same computer hard disk, you must use separate partition for each.

2-Install Windows XP First on a partition of at least 3Gigs. This is because Linux will recognize the NTFS file system used by Windows XP. So, Linux will prompted you to leave the NTFS file system intact or format it.

Once prompted if you need to format the whole drive, you will choose the option that keeps Windows XP installed.

3-Install Linux after you are done totally with Windows XP installation.

When you are done installing Windows XP, you will install Linux an another partition. Up until now, you have installed Windows XP and Linux on different partitions.

This will enable you to have a computer ready to be rendered a dual boot system that will give you the options of loading either operating systems: Windows XP or Linux.

However, you still have to complete one step to ensure a successful dual boot set up on your computer. In step four, I will explain what completes your successful dual boot installation.

4-Edit lilo.conf file. After you are done installing both operating system, Linux and Windows XP, your computer will reboot. You will be amazed to find out that your computer is loading Linux without giving you the choice of loading Windows XP.

This situation is tricky and makes you think that the installation of the dual boot did not take place. This problem is resolved by editing a Linux file called lilo.conf.

Once lilo.conf is edited properly by adding a line of code that points to Windows XP operating system, you will be able to resolve the problem in order to be able to have a choice of two operating systems. Linux or Windows XP.

In Summary, don’t spend countless hours installing two operating systems unless you take into account the 4 simple steps above.

Thanks,

In our world where data is power, large companies put a high priority on their data back-up and data storage. Unfortunately, this kind of data storage is typically very expensive and impractical for the small home PC user. Luckily, with the introduction of two new formats of digital storage that are now available, there is a solution. With the DLT or Digital Linear Tape and the LTO or Linear Tape Open, the need for data storage has far exceeded past levels (as compared to previous had 8mm or DDS backups).

1. Recent Boost In Performance

The Digital Linear Tape or DLT systems have been available for use to everyone since 1985, and recent increases in both speed and capacity has given this technology a new lease on life. In fact, they have been the leading technology in the past several years for small to medium-sized systems. The only competitors for DLT were DDS or DAT tapes. The advantage of DLT tapes above these two leading competitors is that the tape heads had a tendency to drift that meant technicians had to constantly monitor them to ensure storage. Unlike DLT reliability that is based on a straight up and down recording mode.

2. Super DLT

A newer version with higher capacity and improved features is called Super DLT (SDLT). Super DLT uses a new recording format, but it also maintains a limited form of backwards compatibility with previous iterations of DLT. It incorporates the ability to read older tapes, although it cannot write to them. This means it would probably be quite useful in allowing organizations to maintain their present archives in a useable form. This would mean that there can be a very big saving both in time and money for companies because older tapes don’t have to be re-recorded onto newer ones.

4. Tremendous Boost In Speed And Capacity

With the introduction of Super DLT earlier this year, the capacity has soared as much as 110 gigabytes on one cartridge, at a speed of 10 megabytes per second. A tremendous boost in performance was seen with the speed of backup doubled, and capacity more than doubled, the technology is now capable to handle large systems and networks that DLT previously couldn’t handle. Competing technologies can offer very fast backups, but the tapes themselves contain very little data - hundreds of megabytes as opposed to the hundreds of gigabytes that DLT offers.

5. Linear Tape Open

Another technology that has recently emerged that is comparable, if not a bit more advanced than DLT is LTO or Linear Tape Open. A consortium product from Seagate, IBM and Hewlett-Packard. LTO can put 100 gigabytes on a cartridge and can store data at speeds up to 15 megabytes per second. But there are a lot who still prefer to use the more known and reliable Super DLT. There are very cautious system administrators who don’t wish to try LTO, one technician even said that DLT is a more than acceptable choice: Thirty million cartridges and a million tape drives can’t be wrong. Of course, LTO can’t be totally neglected. Of course, Super DLT uses a good deal of new technology as well, so even though LTO is a completely new technology, it has able to pave a nice pathway for it that may help establish itself for future preference.

6. Long Life

These kinds of storage media are guaranteed to last for 30 years of data retention under very specific environmental conditions; however, mishandling can easily damage these storage devices for example, dropping or improper packaging during shipment may easily damage or destroy the device’s capability to store data properly. With today’s ever increasing demands for storage capacity because of our need to protect and store our data, it is possible that there is going to be more pressure on hardware developers to produce a lot more faster and bigger storage and backup devices to back up, store, protect and retrieve important data be it business or personal. Now both medium and small size users are given a choice: Super DLT, based on generations of thorough development and refinement, or LTO, a new technology from a high-powered and stable group of advance technological companies.

“My computer seems to get slower and slower. A friend told me to clean my registry. Will that really help, and how can I do that?”

Cleaning the Registry

Yes, your computer will run better if you occasionally clean your Windows system registry. But first, let’s define exactly what the registry is. The registry is a database in which Windows keeps track of relationships between hardware and software. It stores all the settings and options for the operating system, hardware, software, users, and preferences of the PC. The registry manages your system startup options, and keeps track of all software that’s installed.

Prior to the introduction of the Registry in Windows 95, each software package had it’s own INI files to store configuration settings. These files tended to be scattered all over the hard drive, which made them difficult to keep track of. The centralized registry does consolidate all that information, but it has its own problems. Since it is a single point of failure, damage to the Registry can render a Windows system unbootable, and in extreme cases can only be fixed by reinstalling the operating system. (That’s why backups are important!)

Oh, That Waxy Buildup!

Especially on Windows 95/98 computers, it’s common for the registry to grow very large over time, which tends to slow down the computer’s startup and can make it unstable. And even on Windows NT, XP or 200x, you can end up with lots of unnecessary registry entries that are created when you install or remove programs on your computer. Sometimes an “orphaned” registry entry can confuse Windows during startup and cause a delay. And in general, slimming down your registry will make Windows run faster.

The REGEDIT command will allow you to view and edit the registry, but if you don’t know what you’re doing under the hood, just put down that wrench and back away slowly. Specialized programs exist to examine the registry, compare what’s in there to what’s really on your system, and either correct or delete erroneous entries.

REGCLEAN is a utility program included in Windows 95 and Windows 98. This program is no longer officially supported by Microsoft, but many users report that it works fine on Windows XP systems. You can also try RegSeeker which is a highly rated (and free) registry cleaner that I like. There are dozens of registry cleaners available. If you want to play the field, read some reviews by reputable sources before you install.

Making Windows Faster

I should also mention that there are lots of other things that can cause your computer to bog down. Viruses, spyware, a hard drive that needs defragmenting, and other factors can contribute to the problem. In my article Make Windows XP Run Faster! I share my special recipe to clean the icky goo out of your computer’s pipes, so Windows will start quicker, run more reliably, and go faster on the info-superhighway.

Choosing to make a web site is a very big decision. However, even more important than deciding to make the website itself, is choosing your web host. There are many web hosts out there, and so it is very difficult to find the web host that’s right for you. In order to find the best web host, it is important to find as many options as possible, and have a clear idea of what you want out of your web host. Following these four tips will make your search for a solid web host a lot easier.

1. Use search engines. Search on Google and Yahoo using keywords such as “web host.” Carefully going through the results will give you an accurate idea of the web hosting options available. Some may say that the web hosts ranked the highest are clearly the best, but this is not always true. Taking the time to look at a large number of the results will give you an ample group of web hosts to compare.

2. Know how your site is going to work. This tip may sound confusing, but it is important to know what your goals will be for your web site. If you plan to have a great number of large files hosted on your site, then you want a web host that gives you ample amounts of space. Bandwidth should also be taken into consideration. Is the site a personal site, or a commercial site? If you plan on making money with your website, than a larger investment for more storage space and bandwidth is justifiable. If you are making your site a blog and hosting it with a service such as TypePad, you want a web host that allows domain mapping.

3. Have a price range in mind. Knowing the general amount of money you are willing to spend will save you a great amount of time. If a certain web host is simply too expensive, then you move on to the next one with no issues. Additionally, if you set a specific price range, you can search for the best offer within that price range. Some web hosts may offer more space for $20 than others do for the same price.

4. Finally, make sure that you have web host support based on your needs. If it is your first web site, then you might want a web host that is willing to give advice on building new sites. Some web hosts offer a very “hands on” approach to new users. Other web hosts simply let users do whatever they want and no help is offered.

The most important thing when finding a web host is knowing exactly what you want. Your search for a web host will be a lot easier if you search for hosts using Search Engines like Google and Yahoo, and you know what you are looking for. Every web host offers something a little different than others. Simplicity and customer service should be high priorities when searching for a web host. Remember, the most expensive, and highest ranked web host may not always be the best web host for your needs. Beginning your web host search with a clear, informed mind is the perfect way to assure a successful venture.

Paul Herbert writes about a variety of Internet topics, but focuses on UK Web Hosting.

With the price of gasoline on the upswing (again, April 20, 06), there seems to be little sign that we Americans are at least trying to conserve fuel, though there are pockets of concerned groups that are making their voice heard, mainly against Oil Company price gouging. At the same time the automotive advertising media seems to be pushing the higher gas consumption Suv’s and cars. Granted, along with trucks, etc., these are the prime fossil fuel guzzlers, but they are by no means the only culprit for our increasing fuel dependency, be it fossil or renewable.

With all due respect to mr. Edison, inventor of our indirectly fueled commercial lighting system, which was design for practicality and therefore efficiency at the time had not been entered into the picture. The goal was only to provide a method of supplying the world with inexpensive, widely available commercial lighting. From this gigantic effort, we know, the incandescent light bulb was born. This achievement was, at the time, a monumental gift to the world…, but the future would reveal some flaws.

This virtually unchanged technology is still the top lighting source used today. For decades, the incandescent light bulb had little or no competition. Over this time, It has maintained the lowest cost per light unit of output(brightness) than any other lighting technology. All of this time its shortcomings were not challenged, or at least not so heavily, until a much newer technology, the LED(Light Emitting Diode) made its phenomenal technological advances in recent years…by surpassing it in light output for the power consumed. All that remains for the LED is the cost per lumen of light output to drop to a competitive level. Given the present LED disparity with the incandescent, the total advantages of LED technology far outweighs this because of its longevity of operation, which is over 10 years in constant use(under most conditions), it is virtually unbreakable and because LEDs give off so little heat due to their much greater efficiency and thus lower operating cost, it far outweighs its present day greater price structure.

Consumer Demand For The LED Is The Key

As the demand levels for this new breed of basic “tear drop” solid state light source increases, the price will come down some more and it will eventually reach that price competitive barrier. Of course, production quantities alone will not be the only influence determining the final selling price of the LED lamp to the “home lighting” market, for example, but its total monetary value to this particular market.

We would certainly hope that the LED would eventually replace most our present day lighting
sources, saving the nation…to begin with untold billions of dollars per year, but even
if this were possible today, just a little over 20 % of our energy consumption is used for lighting, so this alone would not solve our total energy problems, but it is certainly a beginning. It will take a national and multinational effort to even begin to level off
the world energy needs through the use of Renewables. It could certainly and quickly reach
a point that an all out global effort will be needed to ebb the ongoing crisis and if not curbed quickly at that point, I believe it may reach a point of…irreversibility.

One of the most common problems that an individual encounters with their MP3 player is incompatible file formats. All MP3 players can read files in .mp3 format and most can also accommodate .wma formats. Even if a music file doesn’t match these extensions, there are several software programs that allow an individual to convert file formats to suit their MP3 player. Compatible files are the most important thing to consider with an MP3 player because without them, the music will not play.

If you’re MP3 isn’t playing an entire song, check to make sure that the entire track was downloaded properly. Sometimes a computer glitch or simply an oversight in downloading a portion of a track rather than the entire track will present a problem. If the complete track was downloaded and working properly before being downloaded onto the MP3 player, there may be a hardware problem with the player itself.

When downloading any file, including an MP3 music file, make sure that the download is free of any viruses and was obtained from a reputable source. By running a virus check on the file prior to opening it, an individual may be able to protect themselves from a computer virus. If a file contains a virus of some type, it may cause operational problems with the MP3 player as well. Before it even makes it to the MP3 player, however, any present virus will have already infected the computer. Your best bet? Purchase a reliable anti-virus software program and use it regularly on every file download.

If a problem arises with an MP3 player and cannot be resolved by first consulting the user’s manual, which should have been included in the packaging, individuals are urged to contact the manufacturer for possible warranty information. If the MP3 player is not covered under warranty, the company may still be able to repair or replace any defective part at the customers expense. Otherwise, a local electronic retailer may be able to correct the problem or recommend that the MP3 player be replaced altogether.

Advantages in migrating from ASP to ASP.NET

ASP to ASP.NET migration can be done by just changing the extension from .asp to .aspx. But before transporting or migrate an .asp file to .aspx, you might think twice the necessity of changing the file. The first advantage is that ASP.NET applications can handle two to three times the request per second as compared to ASP applications. This will certainly increase the performance of ASP.NET applications. The second advantage will be that all the processes are monitored by ASP.NET runtime so that if any one process leaks, a new process can be created in its place. This will help ASP.NET applications to be continuously available to manage requests.

The third and the biggest advantage is the productivity time for an application. The in-built server controls and event handling helps developers to easily create applications. Moreover, the code behind feature in ASP.NET applications separates the design page with the code page. The compiled execution makes the ASP.NET applications much faster than ASP and the output caching feature eliminate the need to query the database each time the request is made.

You can migrate from ASP application to ASP.NET application in two ways: Horizontal migration and Vertical migration. In Horizontal application, one complete tier of the code has to be replaced. In Vertical application, you have to modify every piece of the application through all n-tiers. You can also migrate to ASP.NET application by just changing the file extension. But this requires the VBScript to be changed to VB.NET. In case, you do not want to integrate an ASP application to ASP.NET, you can run both the application on the same server. They both have completely different processing engines.

Thus, ASP to ASP.NET migration means complete object-oriented programming structure, easy maintenance, reusable code, automatic documentation from reverse engineering, ASP.NET controls, and multiple-language debugger.
